New Mansfield firefighter sworn in

A swearing-in ceremony was held for new Mansfield firefighter Brice Wilson Tuesday morning at the Mansfield Fire Station No. 1 on East Third Street.

Wilson, 22, of Fredericktown, has been a member of the 200th RED HORSE squadron of the Ohio National Guard in Mansfield since February.

Mansfield fire Chief Steve Strickling told the crowd that he and others interviewed Wilson about four months ago as he was headed to basic training.

Wilson's hiring brings the department to a total of 90 firefighters, Strickling said. Four more firefighters are expected to join the department this year.

Brice was surrounded by his wife Olivia and 10-month-old son James and Brice's mother Cristin Wilson.

Wilson said he always wanted to be a firefighter and joined the department to "protect and serve" the same reason he joined the 200th RED HORSE.

He said his uncle Josh Sabins is a member of the Westerville Fire Department and Sabin's brother Tim Sabins works for MedFlight.

City officials and firefighters gathered in the training room to welcome Wilson with donuts and beverages.
