Mansfield’s Nick Bailey tops Week 18 Shreveport Times Athlete of the Week voting
Mansfield’s Nick Bailey secured enough votes this week to win the Times online poll for Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers and the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission.
A standout basketball player for the Wolverines, Bailey is the first Mansfield winner of the 2021-22 school year in the non-football poll. He joins previous winners that include Logan Olsen and Catherine Jurkovich of Airline, Mariah Hintze (Ruston) Taylor McCabe (Northwood) and Daly Nagot (Benton).
Bailey and his supporters racked up 15,415 votes, a solid 31% of the 49,665 votes cast in the weekly online recognition. Those numbers allowed Bailey to top a field of 11 additional candidates, including second-place Kelsey Coburn, a Calvary soccer player, who made a strong run for the recognition with 9,202 votes (18.5%).

Bailey will receive a backpack, a boxed lunch combo and some additional swag courtesy of Raising Cane’s.
The 6-foot-4 junior averages 17 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists as the only returning starter for coach Chris Bush.
“He is really starting to develop into a solid basketball player,” Bush said. “Nick is one of those unique athletes who can do just about anything. He is a varsity letterman in basketball, football, baseball and track. He has unlimited athletic potential and I look forward to seeing what he does the rest of this year and next.”
Others on the 18th ballot of the school year were Ella Cosby, North DeSoto soccer; Maya Jackson, Parkway soccer; Cage Van Norman, Loyola basketball; Jada Stewart, Benton basketball; Lance Waddles, Evangel basketball; Sydney Young, Byrd basketball; Charlie Yocum, Haughton wrestling; Danon Walker, Airline wrestling; Quan Lilly, Zwolle basketball and Morgan Bates, Captain Shreve cheer.
They were chosen because of their performance the previous week or because their names were submitted by their coach. The Times poll is posted each Monday at shreveporttimes.com with a new slate of student-athletes in high school sports other than football.
The Times online only poll runs through Thursday midnight. The poll includes northwest Louisiana athletes competing in volleyball, cross country, swimming, cheerleading, basketball, soccer, wrestling, powerlifting, indoor and outdoor track, baseball, softball, golf, tennis, bowling, gymnastics and fishing while those sports are in season.
