A 62-year-old Mansfield man was killed in a head-on crash at 5:48 p.m. Thursday night on Ohio 13 North involving a vehicle and a semitrailer that collided near the Valero gas station.

The man has been identified as David Barnett of Mansfield, according to the Richland County Coroner's Office.

Mansfield police Capt. Chad Brubaker said in a news release the crash occurred just north of 1368 N. Main St. and involved a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck that was traveling south on North Main Street and a 1998 International 9400 semitrailer that was heading north on North Main Street.

The preliminary investigation indicates that there was a head-on collision between the pickup and the semi-truck, Brubaker said.

Richland County coroner's investigator Bob Ball said Barnett died at the scene of the crash. The death remains under investigation pending an autopsy at the Montgomery County Medical Examiner's Office.

Brubaker said the semi's driver and passenger were not injured.

The crash resulted in more than 100 gallons of diesel fuel being spilled onto the roadway and the semi-trailer catching fire. The Mansfield police are being assisted by the Mansfield post of the Ohio Highway Patrol.

The Mansfield Fire Department is coordinating with the Environmental Protection Agency to ensure proper containment and cleanup of the diesel fuel, Brubaker said.

The weather was not believed to have been a contributing factor of the crash.
