A Sunday morning shooting left a 23-year-old man dead in Manteca.

Police responded to a call at about 12:30 a.m. on a report of  “a shooting with a subject possibly down” in the 200 block of N. Main Street.

Police said there was an altercation that might have led up to the shooting. Police are still investigating what led to the altercation.

The motive remains unknown.

“At some point during the altercation, the victim was shot, and the suspect was located down the street about three or four blocks away,” said Lt. Gregg Beall, a Manteca Police Department spokesperson.

Officers located the “unresponsive victim” in a parking lot. They began CPR on the victim while medics arrived on the scene.

Shortly after, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The victim was identified as Francisco Lara, 23. Lara’s city of residence is still to be determined, said Christy Patterson, a spokesperson for the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner's Office.

Edward Lamar Young, Jr., 33, from Manteca, was arrested by police a few blocks away on the 600 block of N. Main Street, police said.

Young was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail in connection with the shooting. Bail has not been allowed. He is scheduled to appear in San Joaquin County Court at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"It usually doesn't happen. It usually doesn't occur in homicides, where you make an arrest the same day or within you know the next … hour.” Beall said. “So, we're very proud of the work that they did, and obviously our condolences go out to the family of the deceased.”

“The investigation indicates that this is an isolated incident and there are no other suspects outstanding,” police said in a statement.

The Manteca Police Department encourages the public to share any information regarding this case by calling the Manteca Police Department at (209) 456-8101. The lead investigator for this homicide investigation is Detective Morrison.
