For those of us who have attended a summer camp as a kid, it brings back fond memories of campfires, s’mores, hiking, swimming and meeting new friends just to name a few.

Summer camp was not just a way to pass the time in the summer, it was a time to branch out away from home and see what it is like to do things on our own and see the world.

With warm weather here, it is that time of year for kids to get outside to learn, explore, and socialize by attending summer camps. In a world full of uncertainty, summer camp provides the needed skills for kids to connect with other kids their age and to branch out into new territories. According to the American Camp Association, “Many summer camp programs specifically focus on teaching, modeling, and practicing the social skills that most schools- because of lack of time and resources — cannot teach.”

Last week, Rutherford County 4-H hosted a Summer Day Camp for youth in 4th-8th grades. This was an opportunity for youth to be outside, learn new things, and meet new friends. After being in school all year, kids were ready for summer to start.

During day camp, the kids were able to enjoy tie dying shirts, fishing, going to the farmers market, kayaking, group game activities, play on the inflatable wet slide, learn about wildlife, grill their own hot dogs, cut their own fruits for a snack, and archery just to name a few. The variety of activities were chosen to meet the skill sets of those youth as well as introduce them to new experiences.

It was a great opportunity for the kids to experience new activities, some kids had never fished before or kayaked, or made a tie dye shirt. Hands on learning is what 4-H is all about, 4-H develops youth to thrive and to “make the best better.” Preparing young people to become responsible, capable, and involved leaders and citizens of Tennessee, and the nation, is the goal of the 4-H program.

With that being said, there are many day camps to choose from this summer in Rutherford County, and 4-H wants to be part of this experience for youth who live here by making the best better!

Rutherford County 4-H will also have a 5-day overnight camp in Crossville, TN for youth currently in 4th-6th grade from June 20-24, 2022. This is a great week of swimming, canoeing, archery, tie dye, leather, fishing, team activities, crafting and more! We have 124 campers attending this camp. This will be the first time since 2019 that this overnight camp has happened. So, campers and volunteers are excited and ready for this adventure!
