How Many Los Andes Copper Ltd. (CVE:LA) Shares Did Insiders Buy, In The Last Year?

It is not uncommon to see companies perform well in the years after insiders buy shares. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So before you buy or sell Los Andes Copper Ltd. (CVE:LA), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.

Do Insider Transactions Matter?

Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock on the market. However, such insiders must disclose their trading activities, and not trade on inside information.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. For example, a Harvard University study found that 'insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year.'

Los Andes Copper Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Director Gonzalo Delaveau made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for CA$116k worth of shares at a price of CA$0.29 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, at around the current price, which is CA$0.33. Of course they may have changed their mind. But this suggests they are optimistic. While we always like to see insider buying, it's less meaningful if the purchases were made at much lower prices, as the opportunity they saw may have passed. The good news for Los Andes Copper share holders is that an insider was buying at near the current price. Gonzalo Delaveau was the only individual insider to buy over the year.

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Our data isn't picking up on much insider ownership at Los Andes Copper, though insiders do hold about CA$743k worth of shares. But they may have an indirect interest through a corporate structure that we haven't picked up on. This level of insider ownership is notably low, and not very encouraging.
