Many Missouri communities recognized for excellence in water fluoridation

ST. LOUIS — Many community water systems across Missouri have been honored with the Water Fluoridation Quality Award from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These communities are maintaining fluoride levels in their water supplies, a key measure in combating tooth decay and promoting oral health.

Among the awarded communities are many water systems in the St. Louis area.
This includes Missouri American Water, which provides service for many St. Louis and St. Charles County communities. St. Louis City and several Jefferson County Public Water Supply Districts were also commended. These systems represent a fraction of the 1,209 public water systems across 27 states that received the award for their efforts throughout 2022.

The fluoridation of community water supplies has been a cornerstone in public health strategy for preventing dental cavities in both children and adults. Casey Hannan, MPH, Director of the CDC Division of Oral Health, highlighted the cost-effectiveness of water fluoridation, noting that for every dollar invested, communities save $20 in dental treatment costs.

Recognized by the CDC as one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century, water fluoridation is lauded for its practicality, cost-effectiveness, and safety. It stands as a testament to a community’s dedication to the oral health of its citizens.
