How many open staff positions are in Marion County school districts
As Marion county schools head back into session, districts will still have open staffing positions waiting to be filled as schools across the state struggle to fill not only teaching positions but various other school staffing positions.
Multiple district leaders have told IndyStar they have enough vital staff already in place for students when they come back into school.
Alex Moseman, the director of talent acquisition for Indianapolis Public Schools, cautioned against viewing the number of open positions a district has to equate how badly they are in need of teachers.
Marion County schools: Teacher shortage not in crisis mode
“The focus on having vacancies equaling teacher shortage is too simple of a calculation,” Moseman told IndyStar.
IndyStar reached out to every Marion County school district to get up-to-date numbers on its current job openings for all staff positions in the district, not just teaching positions, as of Wednesday, July 27.
Some districts also provided IndyStar with the current total amounts of employees working for the district. For districts that didn’t respond to email inquiries, total employee amounts are listed for the most recent staffing data from the Indiana Department of Education for the 2020-2021 school year.

Indianapolis Public Schools
Current total job openings: 291
Total staff positions currently employed: Around 3,800

MSD Washington Township
Current total job openings: 131
Total staff positions currently employed: 1,600
Washington Township's Community Relations Coordinator Ellen Rogers told IndyStar that the number of open positions listed on Washington Township's website is not completely accurate since it is not updated in real-time and still may contain positions they are not trying to fill anymore like summer school postings.

Dana Altemeyer, the Lawrence Township's communications director, told IndyStar that the amount of job postings on the district's website could be out of date due to delays in removing the post from the job board, jobs that remain on its board at all times and candidates that have been identified but are still going through the hiring process.

Speedway Superintendent Kyle Trebley told IndyStar that there are currently no open teacher positions for the district and its job board website is updated after school board meetings.
