From one community to another, South Florida carries a unique identity and history derived from various cultures and traditions.
The Miami Herald recently reported on the U.S. Census Bureau data that showed the state’s racial and ethnic diversity is occurring rapidly, even among younger residents. We are diverse and international like no other American city.
This is why our coverage of diverse communities is so essential to our mission. We have a responsibility to improve the lives of all South Floridians — and especially those in communities that often go unrecognized and unheard.
In our sourcing, storytelling and community engagement, we recognize that we have work to do in how we cover these ever-evolving communities, especially those under-served and under-represented.
We have taken steps to improve our reach to more diverse communities. In a recent effort toward inclusion, we have ensured that diversity is a part of our email newsletters. Soon you will see more voices in other ways. Also, we continue to have occasional listening sessions to help us better understand what our readers expect from us at the community level.
Our ultimate goal is to provide more community-based reporting at the ground level and to meet people where they are with our content — but we need your help.
That’s why we’re launching our Fall News Fund Campaign at MiamiHerald.com/donate, where you can contribute to our community-funded local journalism and leave us a note of support (we love hearing from our readers!).
This fund will expand our ability to reach diverse communities, where access to credible news and information might be limited. We rely on our community’s strength and support to support our local journalism.
As one of our recent donors said a few months ago: “We need to support our local journalism to keep us informed about our community and our issues!”
Our journalists work tirelessly to keep you informed. But we simply need more reporting to cover all of the important issues as our population continues to grow and change.
You have come through in the past, and we’re hoping you will again.
As always, your donation — whether it’s $10 or $1,000 — is 100% tax deductible and will be made to our partner nonprofit foundation.
If you prefer to send in a check, please make it payable to our nonprofit partner “Journalism Funding Partners” or “JFP.” Please include the Miami Herald in the memo line, and include your email address so we can send you an acknowledgment email.
Checks should be mailed to: McClatchy, 1601 Alhambra Blvd, Suite 100, Sacramento, CA 95816.
