How Many Upper East Siders Left NYC During The Pandemic: Report

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Well-to-do New Yorkers began fleeing the city in droves as the coronavirus took hold this spring, and few neighborhoods saw a greater exodus than the Upper East Side, new numbers show.

The Upper East Side's 10128 ranked sixth among all New York City ZIP codes by the number of change-of-address requests filed with the U.S. Postal Service between March 1 and Oct. 31, according to data obtained by the New York Post.

More than 2,100 people in that ZIP code requested a change of address during that time, the Post reported. Neighboring ZIP codes also saw large numbers of residents leave: more than 1,600 in 10028, and 1,500 in 10021.

Overall, the Post's data shows that more than 300,000 New Yorkers left the city during the pandemic, with two Upper West Side ZIP codes seeing the highest numbers. Their destinations included nearby getaways like Westchester and Long Island, as well as more far-flung places like Los Angeles, Honolulu and Palm Beach, Fla., the Post reported.

Here are the top 10 ZIP codes that saw the most New Yorkers leave between March 1 and Oct. 31, 2020:

2. Upper West Side, 10025: 3,000
3. Murray Hill, 10016: 2,889
4. Upper West Side, 10024: 2,708
5. Chelsea/Greenwich Village, 10011: 2,520
6. Upper East Side, 10128: 2,165
7. Downtown Brooklyn, 11201: 1,836
8. Gramercy/East Village, 10003: 1,677
9. Upper East Side, 10028: 1,631
10. Midtown East, 10022: 1,410
