How many white Christmases has Nashville had? Here's the list.

Snow on Christmas Day in Nashville is historically unlikely.

In fact, the National Weather Service in Nashville says that, statistically speaking, there is a 19 percent chance on any given year for snow on Christmas Day and an 8 percent chance of measurable snow, which is 0.1 inch or more.

So, what about the chances of a white Christmas for 2022?

"We'll call it rain OR snow (it'll be close)," the National Weather Service said in its Thursday morning forecast discussion. "If you love this time of the year and the cooler air, this forecast is for you."

When was the last time Nashville, Tennessee had a white Christmas?

The last year Nashville had a white Christmas was 2010, when the city received 1.1 inches of snow. Since snowfall records began in 1884, Nashville has had 28 Christmases with at least a trace of snow or more.

Here's the list, as compiled by the National Weather Service.

  • 2010: 1.1 inches of snow with 0.8 inches falling on Dec. 24.

  • 2002: Trace.

  • 1998: No snow fell on Christmas Day but there was ice and sleet on the roads. Two days before, 0.7 inch of snow fell.

  • 1995: Light flurries.

  • 1993: A dusting.

  • 1992: A dusting, but parts of Nashville had a white Christmas with Joelton and Ridgetop receiving 1 to 2 inches of snow.

  • 1989: 0.1 inch.

  • 1985: Trace.

  • 1983: Trace.

  • 1970: Trace.

  • 1969: About 2.7 inches fell, with snow falling from 3 a.m. to about noon.

  • 1966: No snow fell on Christmas Day but there was 3 inches still on the ground from a prior storm.

  • 1963: There was 6 inches of snow on the ground Christmas morning from a previous storm. This is the most snow Nashville has ever had on the ground on Christmas, at least since record keeping began. The weather service said 5.9 inches of snow fell on Dec. 22; 1.5 inches on Dec. 23; and a trace on Dec. 24.

  • 1962: There was 4 inches of snow the ground from a previous storm.

  • 1956: Trace.

  • 1943: Trace.

  • 1935: Trace.

  • 1924: Trace.

  • 1917: 0.1 inch.

  • 1915: Trace.

  • 1914: 0.2 inch.

What are the other Christmas Day weather records in Nashville?

  • The warmest: 2016 with a high of 76. Second was 1889 with a high of 73.

  • The coldest: 1983 when the Christmas Day high was 15 degrees and the low was minus 5 degrees.
