Several annual events will return to Columbus and vicinity this weekend and early next week, starting with the Heisey Collectors of America's glass show and sale, which runs Thursday through Saturday in Newark, and includes a Saturday morning flea market.

Additionally, the Heart of Grove City Wine & Arts Festival will get underway Friday and Saturday, and the Delaware County District Library will present its yearly Medieval Faire on Saturday. Heading into next week, "Despicable Me" will usher in Free Family Flick Nights at New Albany's Hinson Amphitheater on Tuesday.

The local theater scene will be bustling, as three productions open on Thursday, including a stage adaptation of "The Bodyguard" produced by Columbus native Charles Travon Easley. Just 19, Easley grew up on the city's West Side and wants to give back to his community and offer opportunities for others as was done for him growing up.

Weathervane goes 'Barefoot' in the playhouse

Weathervane Playhouse, 100 Price Road, Newark, will continue its summer-stock season with the Neil Simon classic, "Barefoot in the Park." This rom-com follows newlyweds Paul and Corie Bratter, a rigid lawyer and a free spirit who don’t quite understand each other. Everything that could possibly go wrong does in this funny but truthful play. Containing some adult language and themes, the production is suitable for teens and older. Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday; 2 p.m. Saturday; and 7:30 p.m. June 21-24. Tickets cost $15 to $37. (weathervaneplayhouse.org, 740-366-4616)

Collectors to host vintage glass show, flea market

Vintage glass lovers in Ohio won't want to miss the Heisey Collectors of America (HCA) annual glass show and sale Thursday through Saturday at the Lou and Gib Reese Ice Arena, 935 Sharon Valley Road in Newark. The event will include glass made in Newark by A.H. Heisey & Company between 1896 and 1957, glass from other manufacturers, informational seminars, and more. From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Tom Bredehoft, who co-authored several books on glass with his late wife Neila, will autograph copies of "Heisey Glass 1896-1957: Identification and Value Guide." Hours will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, noon to 4 p.m. Friday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Premiere night tickets for Thursday and Friday are $30. Friday admission is $5, and Saturday is free for all. Ages 12 and younger are admitted free all three days. HCA also will hold a glass flea market from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Canal Market District, 36 E. Canal St., Newark, with free admission. Young local produces 'The Bodyguard' stage play

Experience "One Moment in Time" during a musical play produced by 19-year-old Columbus native Charles Travon Easley, who has loved theater since he was a toddler. Based on the 1992 hit movie starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, "The Bodyguard" opens Thursday at East High School, 1500 E. Broad St. Easley, who grew up on the West Side as the youngest of 12 children, says he wants to give back to and create opportunities for others in his community. He also appears in the production and has directed plays at Columbus' Run the Race Center and performed with the Columbus Children's Theatre. "The Bodyguard," which will feature Houston including "Queen of the Night," "Run to You," and the late singer's signature ballad, "I Will Always Love You," will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday. Otterbein Summer Theatre catches 'Baby' fever

Otterbein Summer Theatre's latest production, “Baby," will take audiences through the highs and lows of three couples in different stages of life as they each deal differently with impending parenthood. The musical centers on two colleges students barely at the start of their adult lives, a pair of thirtysomethings who have had difficulty conceiving and a middle-aged couple who were anticipating their last child's college graduation when a night of unplanned passion lands them back where they started. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday; 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday; 2 p.m. Sunday; 8 p.m. June 22-24; and 2 p.m. June 24 in Fritsche Theatre at Cowan Hall, 30 S. Grove St., Westerville. Grove City uncorks annual wine festival

More than 20 Ohio wineries including Grove City’s Plum Run Winery will showcase their award-winning vintages with samples and bottles for sale at the Heart of Grove City Wine & Arts Festival taking place from 5-10 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday in historic Town Center, 3359 Park St. Grove City. The festival also will feature an eclectic mix of art from jewelry, crafts and glass work to photography and fine art by artists from around the state. Tickets, available the day of the event, are $30, which includes eight tickets for samples and a glass. Additional tickets will be $10 for three. The Knights of the Rose Jousting Troupe – Ohio’s all-female jousting ensemble, visits Sherwood Forest, and a Medieval Marketplace with demonstrations of blacksmithing, wool spinning, woodworking more are just a few of the attractions to behold from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Delaware County District Library's annual Medieval Faire. Taking place at the Ostrander Branch Library, 75 N. Fourth St., Ostrander, the event will pay tribute to the 11th century reign of the Vikings and the 14th century writing of Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales." Special performances include an introduction to bagpipes by George Morrison at 11 a.m.; duets by guitarist Michael Allen and violinist Bonny Lynne at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.; and shows by Quintessence Strings of Marion at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. Guests are encouraged to wear period costumes. 'Despicable Me' kicks off monthly family flicks

Bring a picnic dinner, chairs and blankets to the Charleen and Charles Hinson Amphitheater, 170 E. Dublin Granville, New Albany, on Tuesday evening and marvel at the mischief, mayhem and merriment of the Minions in "Despicable Me," the first offering in the New Albany Community Foundation's Free Family Flick Nights. Dinner also will be available for purchase from local food truck favorites. Alcohol is prohibited. Upcoming showings in the series will be "Encanto" (July 25); "Frozen" (Aug. 25); and "Moana" (Sept. 26. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. and movies start at 7:30 p.m. at each screening. Columbus trumpeter to jazz up Lincoln Theatre

H'ors d'oeuvres, special curated wines, and specialty cocktails will be offered at the next Wine Down Wednesday, but the main course will be served by Columbus jazzman Miles Franklin Smith on the rooftop patio of the Lincoln Theatre, 769 E. Long St., at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Smith, who recently recorded his first studio project, "Green Street," has been a fixture in the local jazz scene since 2018. Aptly named after revered trumpeter Miles Davis, Smith began playing drums at age 3 before switching to trumpet in sixth grade. He has performed with many well-known area musicians like the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, as well as with nationally known artists including Darius Rucker. Urban Arts Space’s exhibition "Irrepressible Soul," a celebration of Black art, identity, and experiences, began earlier this month and will run through July 1. The next event, "Foundation to Future," will take place noon to 6 p.m. Saturday at the OSU African American Extension Center, 905 Mt. Vernon Ave., as part of Juneteenth on the Ave. Other presentations will include "Spoken Soul," an homage to the tradition of spoken word and art as expression of the soul, set for 6:30 p.m. June 23 at the King Arts Complex, 835 Mt. On view for free through Aug. 15 in The Box, "Seed Songs for a New Earth" is the culmination of artist Cadine Navarro's residency at the Wex. This video and immersive installation contemplates our relationship with the land through the sounds of seed. "Dry Ground Burning," showing at 7 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday in the Film/Video Theater, fuses documentary with fiction to paint a dystopian portrait of survival, resilience and insurrection in the central Brazilian region of Sol Nascente.
