Marathon road closures will create traffic holdups. Here's where to avoid driving.

The Vermont City Marathon and Relay is coming to town Sunday and with it, several street closures.

The race's route stretches from Leddy Park all the way to Oakledge Park but the road closures will be largely concentrated downtown and near the waterfront. Avoiding downtown, Battery Street, Pine Street, North Avenue and Leddy and Oakledge Park from 6 a.m. till noon on Sunday will be the safest way to not get stuck in traffic, but if you have to drive, consult the Free Press map or list of closures and delays for specific streets and the times they will be closed or hard to access.

Areas outside of downtown that will be affected most are the neighborhoods west of Shelburne Road in the South End and Lakewood Estates in the New North End.

All vehicle access to the waterfront will be cut off Sunday morning as this will be where the marathon's finish line and medical tents are set up. Access to North Avenue and Pine Street will be limited.

Closures

  • Lake Street: Closed 6 a.m. to noon.

  • Battery Street from Main Street to Maple Street: Closed 7 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.

  • Maple Street, west of Pine Street: Closed 7 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.

  • Pine Street southbound, from Maple Street to Flynn Avenue: Closed 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., local traffic only northbound

  • Pine Street, from Main Street to Maple Street: Closed 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.

  • Foster Street: Closed 7:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.

  • Main Street, west of Church Street: Closed 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.

  • College Street, west of Battery Street: Closed 6 a.m. to noon.

  • Cherry Street, from Church Street to Battery Street: Closed 7:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

  • Battery Street, from Pearl Street to Cherry Street: Local downtown core traffic only 7:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

  • North Avenue, southbound, beltline entrance to Battery Park: Closed 7:45 a.m. to 11a.m. Leddy Park Road 7:45 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Delays

  • South Cove Road, Dunder Road, Red Rock Drive: Delays 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

  • Austin Drive: Delays from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

  • Ferguson Avenue, Lyman Avenue, Morse Place, Home Avenue at Foster St: Delays 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.

  • Flynn Avenue, from Pine Street to Oakledge Park: Delays 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.

  • Lakeside Avenue, Conger Avenue, Central Avenue, Wright Avenue, Harrison Avenue, Proctor Place: Delays 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

  • King Street west of Pine Street: Delays 7:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.

  • City Hall Park area: Delays 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

  • College Street and Bank Street at Church Street: Delays 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

  • Battery Street: Delays 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.

  • Lakewood Estates: Delays 8 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.
