ALBANY, N.Y. — A six-year wait to return to the NCAA Tournament ended after just one game for the Kent State men's basketball team. After their first-round game against Indiana began 40 minutes late, making it the last game of the Round of 64, the Golden Flashes faced an uphill struggle all night Friday at the MVP Arena.

Indiana proved to be a bit too much for the Mid-American Conference champions, winning 71-60. The Golden Flashes, the 13th-seed in Midwest, end their season at 28-8. The fourth-seeded Hoosiers (23-11) continue on to play Miami (Fla.) in a Midwest Region second-round game Sunday afternoon.

Indiana scored 10 of the first 14 points and now hold a 45-31 lead with 16:26 remaining.

Kent fell victim to a 10-for-38 showing (26.3 percent) from the floor, while Indiana was 13-for-29 (44.8).

Both teams only committed two turnovers. The eight-point deficit shows up in the paint where the Hoosiers hold a 20-12 edge.

As you’d expect, a very large Hoosiers squad owns a 14-8 edge in points in the paint.

It has the Hoosiers up 26-23 with 3:58 left and Race Thompson (10 points) headed to the line.

Kent State could close gap to three

A deep trey by Malique Jacobs with 7:24 left put the Golden Flashes even closer to even.

Jacobs hit the 3-pointer on the left elbow and was followed by Tamar Bates. He’s got one shot to try and make it a 21-18 point contest.

VonCameron Davis (5 points), Sincere Carry (4), Miryne Thomas (3) and Chris Payton (2) have accounted for the scoring for the Golden Flashes, who are showing signs of life.

Fifth-seeded Miami took the Midwest Region's other game at Albany in a 63-56 win over 12th-seeded Drake.

That's not to say the Bulldogs (27-8) didn't make the Hurricanes (26-7) sweat. Drake led for 27:05, but faded down the stretch.

Nijel Pack led the way with 21 points for Miami. Wooga Poplar had 15 and Norchard Omier had a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Drake was led by Darnell Brodie's 20 points and nine rebounds. Sardaar Calhoun had 12 points and Roman Penn added 11 in the loss.

The KSU-Indiana winner Sunday in Albany at a time to be determined.

What happened the last time Kent State and Indiana played in the NCAA Tournament?

OK. Save this for trivia night. The last time these two played was on March 23, 2002 in the regional final in Lexington, Ky.

The Hoosiers won 81-69 on the way to a runner-up finish. The Golden Flashes were led by future Pro Football Hall of Famer Antonio Gates, who had 22 points and eight rebounds. Andrew Mitchell finished with 19 points and all-time Kent leading scorer Trevor Huffman finished with eight.
