Marcus Carr, Jabari Rice among Texas players selected to coaches All-Big 12 team

Three Texas players earned spots on the All-Big 12 men’s basketball team, the league office announced Sunday. The annual awards are selected by the league’s head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players.

Texas guard Marcus Carr claimed first-team honors, becoming the first Longhorn to receive first-team accolades since Isaiah Taylor in 2016. Fellow guard Jabari Rice earned the league’s sixth man of the year award, joining Kai Jones (2021) as the lone UT players to claim the honor. Rice also was named to the coaches' third team and the five-player all-newcomers team. Forward Timmy Allen was an honorable mention.

Carr has played and started all 31 games this season and leads the team in scoring (16.2 ppg), assists (129), steals (51) and minutes (33.2 mpg).

Rice, who also was tabbed the national sixth man of the year by College Hoops Today earlier on Sunday, has played in all 31 games. He's second on the team in scoring (12.6 ppg) and fourth in assists (63) and minutes per game (24.2 mpg) and is tied for fourth in rebounding (3.5 rpg).

Allen has started all 31 games. He leads the team in rebounding (5.5 rpg) and is second in assists (109), tied for second in steals (28), is third in blocks (15) and minutes per game (28 mpg) and is tied for third in scoring (10.5 ppg). He has reached double figures 18 times.

No. 9 Texas (23-8, 12-6 Big 12) finished second in the conference regular season and enters this week’s Big 12 Tournament as the No. 2 seed. The Longhorns will open play in a quarterfinal contest against either No. 7-seeded Oklahoma State or No. 10 Oklahoma on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Kansas City.

Kansas junior Jalen Wilson earned player of the year honors after leading the Big 12 in scoring (19.7 ppg) and rebounding (8.4 rpg). Kansas sophomore KJ Adams Jr., a Westlake graduate, picked up the most improved award after starting every game and averaging 10.5 points and 4.5 rebounds. Last season Adams started just one game as a freshman and averaged 1 point and 0.8 boards in 4.8 minutes per game.
