Mardi Gras parades are ready to roll in Lafayette. When will the barricades go up?

Lafayette's first Mardi Gras parade for the 2023 season rolls through the streets on Saturday. In preparation for the parade, barricades are going up along the parade route.

The barricades will be placed on the streets Thursday and remain until after the parade on Saturday.

The barricades will be repositioned back onto the streets on Thursday, Feb.16. Avoid these areas around the parade route to bypass traffic congestion.

The same procedure will be in place for the below parades:

  • Friday, February 17, 2023, at 6:30 pm

  • Saturday, February 18, 2023, at 12:30 pm and 6:30 pm (*Streets reopened between parades)

  • Monday, February 20, 2023, at 6:00 pm

After the parade on Feb. 18, the barricades will remain on the roadways until the end of Mardi Gras Day.

Three parades are scheduled for Mardi Gras Day, Feb. 21. The parades will begin at 10:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

All streets in and around the parade route will be closed until the end of the final parade of the day.  No streets will be open until all citizens are clear of the area and vehicles are able to travel safely.

The intersection of University Ave. and Johnston St. along with the intersection of St. Mary Blvd. and Johnston St. will remain open as crossover intersections until the parade is within several blocks of the cross streets.

All parades will begin at Pontiac Point -Jefferson St. at Surrey St. and end at Cajun Field, except for The Children’s Parade.  The Children’s Parade, which is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 18 at 12:30 p.m. will begin at Lafayette Street and West Vermilion Street and end at Cajun Field.

The Lafayette Police Department asks all residents and businesses along the parade route to make arrangements during the time of the road closures to avoid any inconvenience. Those residents and businesses should contact the Lafayette Police Department at (337)291-8600 for any assistance they may need to negotiate the parade route.
