Mardi Gras parades start Feb. 18 in Terrebonne and Lafourche, but some krewes won't roll

Mardi Gras parades return this year after being canceled in 2021 because of COVID-19, but the Houma-Thibodaux area celebration is still different because of Hurricane Ida.

Hercules will kick off the parades at 6 p.m. Feb. 18, when its "Wild, Wild West"-themed floats roll through Houma.

But several krewes in Terrebonne and Lafourche's bayou communities will not roll this season because of damage or other challenges caused by the storm, which devastated the two parishes Aug. 29.

Parades that won't roll include Tee Caillou in Chauvin; Des Petite Lions, Athena, Nereids and Neptune in Golden Meadow; and Des T. Cajuns and Bon Temps in Larose.

"This year, there's so much devastation here that there's no way that anybody's going to be able to ride," Corine Berthelot, a spokeswoman for La Krewe du Bon Temps in Larose, told The Courier and Daily Comet in October, adding that the parade hopes to return in 2023. "We're just going to pray and keep our fingers crossed that the following year that we can ride."
