Mardi Gras sunglasses through the years at ‘KREWE’ in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Despite the forecast, everyone’s hoping for a sunny Fat Tuesday. If that’s the case, a local sunglasses shop has festive pairs for you. WGNO’s Kenny Lopez takes us shopping at KREWE in the French Quarter.

During Mardi Gras, we all like to wear masks, but what about stepping it up and instead of a mask, why not wear some Mardi Gras sunglasses?

“In 2022, we felt KREWE needed to be part of the celebration in New Orleans for Mardi Gras,” said KREWE Flagship Store General Manager Ron Robinson.

The internationally known and local sunglasses company, KREWE, started designing its limited-edition Mardi Gras collections in 2022 with its “Lundi” collection.

The “Lundi” collection includes three KREWE classics (St. Louis, Collins Nylon and Breton) frames.

“This collection features glitter lamination and traditional Mardi Gras colors,” Robinson said.

In 2023, KREWE designed its “Doubloon Collection” for its ride in the Krewe of Tucks with a pair called the “Merrymen.”

“The frame was inspired by the movie ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,’ which was the theme for the float in Tucks. We also gave out frames off the float,” he said.

Movie stars like Anne Hathaway have even been spotted sporting the “Merrymen” frames.

Now, in 2024, KREWE has released its “Revelry Collection.”

“Named after us Mardi Gras revelers and the fun we have,” Robinson said.

The sunglasses in this collection are KREWE favorites (St. Louis, Cameron, and Bowery Nylon), as well as a new exclusive frame “The Elton.”

“The Elton is inspired by Elton John, feathers, sparkles, and glitter. These sunglasses are oversized and outrageous just like Elton and the Mardi Gras season,” Robinson said.
