Video of Black Lives Matter protesters confronting diners at a Washington, D.C., restaurant went viral Tuesday night and drew backlash online. The incident, captured by The Washington Post reporter Frederick Kunkle, showed a group of white protesters demanding a woman on a restaurant patio in Adams Morgan raise her first in solidarity. A brave research crew from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission captured three massive and scary looking turtles late last week near Gainesville, according to a Facebook post. The reptiles are a newly discovered species: the Suwannee alligator snapping turtle, also known as Macrochelys suwanniensis, said the agency. “Formerly, the alligator snapping turtle (Macrochelys temminckii) was considered a single, wide-ranging species that extended from the Suwannee River drainage west into Texas,” read the FWC post.

The wore disguises to smash the windows and slash the tires of two vehicles in September.
There's nothing like a dip in the Pacific after a long day of work, especially when the job is on the sun-beaten deck or the engine room of a U.S. Coast Guard cutter. So the crew of the national security cutter Kimball ended Wednesday with a special treat -- a carefully orchestrated swim call for more than 40 crew members. With a rescue swimmer in place and other precautions taken to ensure safety, the Coasties jumped in the water with swim fins and other paraphernalia, including a massive inflatable unicorn.
Donald Trump is far behind with female voters. Given that fact, one would expect the Trump campaign to make some moves to appeal to women. Then, shortly before the RNC began, a White House reporter for CBS News drew attention to two of Johnson's tweets from May in which she expressed support for "bringing back household voting," which would give each household a single vote — and give husbands "the final say."
As hundreds of thousands of residents fled their homes along the Gulf Coast in anticipation of Hurricane Laura, officials warned the “catastrophic” Category 4 storm could bring with it an “unsurvivable” storm surge. Hurricane Laura, which has strengthened to a Category 4 storm with winds upwards of 140 mph, is set to intensify further before making landfall Wednesday evening or early Thursday along the Texas and Louisiana coast. The National Hurricane Center said Wednesday the storm is expected to make landfall as an “extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane” with “catastrophic storm surge” that could penetrate up to 40 miles inland.
The Internal Revenue Service says it will soon send “catch-up” stimulus checks to about 50,000 people. The checks will go to those whose original stimulus payments — which were part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security, or CARES, Act — wrongly went toward paying their spouse's past-due child support, the IRS said Tuesday in a news release. Spouses who submitted an Injured Spouse Allocation form with their 2019 or, in some cases, 2018 tax returns will be mailed the payments.
An aunt of a soldier whose body is believed to have been found about 30 miles from the Texas base where he was stationed says her nephew had been happy in the Army up until a few months ago, when he reported being sexually assaulted by a superior. A body that authorities believe is that of Sgt. Elder Fernandes, 23, was found late Tuesday in Temple, according to local police. Fernandes was reported missing on Aug. 19 by Killeen and Army police.
Julia Jackson, the mother of Wisconsin man Jacob Blake, who was shot several times by police on Sunday, says she has the “utmost” respect for president Donald Trump as she apologised for missing his call. “And then also, for president Trump, I'm sorry I missed your call!,” Ms Jackson told CNN in a press conference on Tuesday. The president has yet to comment on the shooting of Mr Blake, which took place in front of his three young children.
Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden shouldn't get too comfortable. It's been a few days since the end of the Democratic National Convention, and as FiveThirtyEight's Nate Silver notes, Biden hasn't seen a typical post-DNC bump in his polling numbers. And while he was once handily leading in several states Hillary Clinton surprisingly lost in 2016, those advantages are starting to slip as well.
Hurricane Laura was barreling towards the coast of the southern US states of Louisiana and Texas on Wednesday as a monster Category 4 storm, prompting warnings of "unsurvivable" and evacuation orders for hundreds of thousands of Gulf Coast residents. The Miami-based National Hurricane Center said Laura was packing winds of 145 miles per hour (230 kilometers per hour) and was expected to make landfall along the Gulf Coast late Wednesday or early Thursday. As an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 hurricane -- the second-highest on the Saffir-Simpson wind scale -- the NHC said Laura may pummel the Louisiana and Texas coasts with up to 20-foot (six-meter) storm surge and extreme winds, cause flash flooding and possibly spawn tornadoes.
Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. resigned Tuesday after explosive new allegations emerged that he and his wife had an inappropriate sexual relationship with a man who was their business partner. Falwell initially agreed to resign on Monday, but then refused to do so, Liberty officials said. He apparently reversed himself again Monday night, telling the Wall Street Journal he had submitted his resignation letter.
The son of Herschel Walker called Jacob Blake a "crazy, violent criminal" as the Heisman Trophy winner appeared at the Republican National Convention to support Donald Trump. In a Twitter video posted on Monday, Christian Walker said the shooting of Mr Blake in Wisconsin was "another incident of a crazy violent criminal refusing to follow directions from police officers and getting consequence for it". Mr Blake, 29, was shot in the back seven times and paralyzed on Sunday after he was reportedly involved in a physical altercation with police before walking to his vehicle.
Markey, a progressive and co-author of the Green New Deal, has the support of 52 percent of likely Massachusetts Democratic Primary voters, a poll from the UMass Lowell Center for Public Opinion shows. Just 40 percent said they'd vote for Kennedy, putting Markey safely over Kennedy even if the 6 percent of undecided voters in the poll went in the challenger's favor. Another poll released Wednesday from the progressive think tank Data for Progress meanwhile gives Markey an 8-point advantage over Kennedy.
Coronavirus cases linked to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota have now been identified in eight states. Before hundreds of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts descended upon a small South Dakota town, against many residents' wishes, for the annual Sturgis rally, public-health experts said it could be a catalyst for further spread of the coronavirus. Cases stemming from the 460,000-person event, which kicked off on August 7, have now been spotted in eight states: Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, and Washington.
Laura strengthened Wednesday into a menacing Category 4 hurricane, raising fears of a 20-foot storm surge that forecasters said would be "unsurvivable” and capable of sinking entire communities. Authorities implored coastal residents of Texas and Louisiana to evacuate and worried that not enough had fled. The storm grew nearly 87% in power in just 24 hours to a size the National Hurricane Center called “extremely dangerous.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention quietly tweaked its guidance on COVID-19 testing Monday, making a change that could result in fewer people being tested and hinder contact tracing efforts. "It seems as though this new guidance is actively discouraging people from seeking testing, even if they have a known exposure," Angela Rasmussen, a research scientist at Columbia Public Health in New York City, said. President Donald Trump has been outspoken about his belief that the United States has the most COVID-19 cases in the world because of the number of tests it carries out.
