Margo Price and MUNA to tape 'Austin City Limits' this spring — here's how to go

"Austin City Limits" will kick off tapings for its upcoming 49th season with two acts who are no strangers to the Live Music Capital: country singer Margo Price and indie-pop band MUNA.

Price is set to tape an episode of the venerated music program on March 19. MUNA members Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin and Naomi McPherson will take the iconic ACL Live stage on April 24. The show, which airs on Austin PBS, announced the news on Feb. 16.

Margo Price has appeared on 'Austin City Limits' before.

The March taping marks Price's second solo stand (but third appearance) on "Austin City Limits." She made her debut appearance for Season 42 in 2017 and returned for a duet with Lucinda Williams during the 2021 "Austin City Limits" Hall of Fame show.

The recently announced taping makes sense, since she is on the lineup for this year's South by Southwest as a keynote speaker. The Illinois-born singer is a frequent visitor to Austin, including stints at Willie Nelson's Luck Reunion, Austin City Limits Music Festival and even last year's Texas Book Festival (to promote her memoir "Maybe We'll Make It"). She released her new album, "Strays," earlier this year.

Last year, Price talked to former American-Statesman writer Peter Blackstock about her memoir, her relationship with Nelson and "Strays."

"I started writing ('Strays') when I was still drinking, and then by the end of it, I wasn't drinking, but we were doing lots of psychedelics," she said of the album, which leans into a harder sound. "So it's out there, but it's still grounded. I listened to a lot of Joni Mitchell and Patti Smith and Bob Dylan and Tom Petty when we started writing it. So it's all over the place, but it holds up. I'm really excited for everybody to hear it."

MUNA will make their 'Austin City Limits debut

MUNA, meanwhile, has marked "Austin City Limits" on their calendar just as they swing through town for their headlining tour; they play Stubb's on April 26. The band also just came to ACL Fest and SXSW last year.

We wrote about the band's SXSW showcase in 2022: "Gavin introduced one song as being about desperation and longing. 'Actually, that's all our songs,' she corrected.

"And it's true, and it's why MUNA has earned a dedicated fan base over a short few years. This is the grand tradition of crying in the club, but with explicitly queer lyrics that invite that community to see themselves in lyrics about infatuation and toxic relationships, no mental gymnastics necessary."
