Margot Robbie’s upcoming films include Barbie, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 and Asteroid City, and she has been nominated for five British Academy film awards, four Golden Globes and five Screen Actors Guild awards. But her personal life is not so often in the spotlight.

Here’s what you need to know about Margot Robbie’s husband, Tom Ackerley.

Who is Tom Ackerley?

Tom Ackerley is a 32-year-old director and producer.

He was brought up in Guildford, Surrey and went to school at nearby Godalming College. He began his career as a floor runner on the film Big Fat Gypsy Gangster and then became a production assistant for 2013 film Trance. Ackerley advanced up the assistant director ladder, working on The Last Days of Mars, Pride and eventually Suite Française, which Robbie starred in. He also became the third assistant director on the Mission: Impossible sequel, MI-5.

More recently, he has gained production credits on projects with Margot: the ice-skating biopic I, Tonya, in which his wife plays disgraced figure-skater Tonya Harding, Terminal, a thriller, and the Oscar-winning film Promising Young Woman.

He and Robbie are also working on film adaptations of Tank Girl and Barbie.

How did the pair meet?

The pair met on the set of Margot Robbie’s film Suite Française, when she was still on the way up.

Speaking to US Vogue, she said: “I was the ultimate single gal. The idea of relationships made me want to vomit. And then this crept up on me. We were friends for so long. I was always in love with him but I thought, Oh, he would never love me back. Don’t make it weird, Margot. Don’t be stupid and tell him that you like him. And then it happened, and I was like, of course we’re together. This makes so much sense, the way nothing has ever made sense before.”

They tied the knot in a private ceremony in Australia’s Gold Coast in December 2017.

He and Robbie founded their LuckyChap production company in 2014, alongside friends Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr.

LuckyChap Entertainment has produced several films and television series including I, Tonya and Birds of Prey, both of which starred Robbie.

Ackerley opened up to MovieMaker magazine in 2020 about their goal to make female-focused films and amplify new voices.

“If we can be a company that curates new and emerging talent, and can bring them through and provide that platform to do bigger movies and studio movies, that’s ideally what we want to do,” he said.

Robbie added of her co-founders: “It’s nice to be in business with people where I already know we’re going to do life together anyway.”
