Mariah Carey to Release Unearthed Alternative Album

Mariah Carey super fans pay attention, because Christmas just came early.

The singer just revealed that she has and plans to release her lost alt-rock album, Someone’s Ugly Daughter, which she made more than 25 years ago, Stereogum reports.

Her original version of Someone’s Ugly Daughter was discovered and will be released, the singer revealed during a recent interview with Rolling Stone Music Now.

She and the band wrote and recorded an alt-pop/rock album while they worked on her fifth studio album, Daydream, which became an international phenomenon in 1995. The album, Someone’s Ugly Daughter was released by a band called Chick through Sony/BMG.

According to a 2020 tweet from Mariah herself, Mariah’s friend and roommate Clarissa Dane re-recorded Mariah’s lead vocals.

Mariah’s involvement was largely unknown before 2020.

She wrote, “Fun fact: I did an alternative album while I was making Daydream Just for laughs, but it got me through some dark days. Here’s a little of what I wrote about it in #TheMeaningOfMariahCarey S/O to my friend Clarissa who performs the lead w/ me as a hidden layer #Chick #TMOMC.”

Two years ago, she revealed in her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, that she once produced, wrote, and sang background vocals for a forgotten alternative rock album in the 1990s. “I was playing with the style of the breezy-grunge, punk-light white female singers who were popular at the time,” she wrote.

Though the singer did not reveal when Someone’s Ugly Daughter would be released, it shouldn’t take too long. A new studio album, a re-recording of her #1 hit song We Belong Together, and a documentary are currently being worked on, she said on Rolling Stone's podcast.
