Marianna DiGiacomo, of Stark Library, shares job insights and favorite, recent reads

Marianna DiGiacomo is the Community Services Director of Stark Library. Here she shares what her job entails, her favorite thing about Stark Library and what she has been reading lately.

Q. As Community Services Director at Stark Library, can you tell me what your job entails?

A. In my role as community services director, I lead the planning for programming, events and literacy initiatives, and I oversee organization-wide community partnerships, mobile services and outreach efforts — what I think of as the really fun things!

Q. How did you come to work at the library in your current position?

A. I have always loved the library. My first job was working at my neighborhood library when I was in high school. From there, I went on to work as a children’s librarian and branch manager for the Akron-Summit County Public Library. I joined Stark Library in 2007 and served as youth services librarian and literacy and events coordinator prior to my role as community services director.

Q. If you could tell About readers one thing about Stark Library, what would you want them to know?

A. Stark Library is a welcoming community gathering place that has something for everyone. If you have not visited a Stark Library location lately, we would love to see you. Whether you are looking for your next good read, need resources to help prepare your child for school or want to attend an engaging event, we have all of that and much more.

Q. What’s your favorite thing about the library?

A. My favorite thing about Stark Library is our commitment to service. We are always adapting to meet the needs of those we serve, and we strive to connect people to the resources they need to pursue lifelong learning.

What Marianna DiGiacomo has been reading lately

What’s your favorite book of all time?

“The Shoemaker’s Wife” by Adriana Trigiani. It is a beautifully written, historical epic about love and family that takes you on an amazing journey with the characters. After reading this book, I felt like the characters were part of my family.

What is your guilty pleasure book?

Anything by Sandra Brown. She writes great romantic thrillers, and when I pick up one of her books, I can’t put it down.

What is the last book you read?

“Long Way Down” by Jason Reynolds. Jason was a recent author in Stark Library’s Speaking of Books author series. “Long Way Down” is written entirely in verse and takes place over a 60-second elevator ride where the main character, Will, is on his way to avenge his brother’s murder. Reynolds uses his powerful words to examine how decisions can impact not just our lives but our world.

Who is your favorite author and why?

Adriana Trigiani. She writes wonderful stories about Italian families. She mixes humor and emotion and really captures what it is like to grow up Italian. I feel a real connection to her stories.

What is next up on your reading list?

“Run, Rose, Run” by James Patterson and Dolly Parton. When I learned Patterson’s new novel was a collaboration with Dolly Parton, I knew I had to read it.

What book have you read that you think the movie is better?

“The Princess Bride” by William Goldman. I tried to read the book after watching the movie many years ago and thought the movie was much better.

What is a book you wish you had written?

“Goodnight Moon” by Margaret Wise Brown. This book is a classic and a perfect bedtime story that has stood the test of time.
