Are you a fan of staying awake at night, sweating in abject horror? And do you welcome nightmares when you finally fall asleep? If so, then Marianne is the show for you.

After Netflix dropped the French horror story on Friday, September 13th – it just had to be Friday 13th – and plenty of terrified viewers sat through all eight episodes, following Emma in the fight against demonic forces.

Fans who were strong enough to hang on until the end are now eager to see what lies in store for the young horror writer following that cliffhanger.

Join us here at Digital Spy as we face the witch head on and reveal everything you need to know about Marianne season two.

Marianne season 2 release date: When will it arrive on Netflix?

Unfortunately, Netflix haven't renewed Marianne just yet (presumably because they're too scared to do so).

Given how the first season ended on a cliffhanger, you'd think that a renewal would be guaranteed, but if Marianne doesn't return, this wouldn't be the first time that Netflix have cancelled a show without providing closure for fans.

Without access to Netflix viewing figures, it's hard to say how likely a season-two renewal might be, but the French export seems to have resonated with fans and critics online.

Assuming that Marianne will be renewed in the next month or so, we imagine that a second season could fly in towards the end of 2020, perhaps in another Friday the 13th slot. If so, then the only two options are either March or November, and our money's on the latter choice, right after Halloween.

Marianne season 2 cast: Who will be in it?

One cast member who's guaranteed to return in a second season is Victoire Du Bois. Since she made her film debut in Calm at Sea (2011), the young French star has tackled a range of roles, including Chiara in the Oscar winning movie Call Me by Your Name (2017).

Emma's friend Camille is also likely to return, played once again by Lucie Boujenah. While she's starred in a number of French film and TV roles, the French-Tunisian actress is probably most famous to English-language speaking audiences for her turn in Marianne.

Given how season one ended, it would be strange if Séby doesn't appear in a second season either, so also expect to see more of actor Ralph Amoussou if or when Marianne returns.

After a climactic struggle against the "demon's wife" Marianne in the season-one finale, it looked like Emma had finally defeated the witch, bringing safety to her little French town.

Of course, as is often the case with horror, there was more to this than meets the eye.

Before leaving, Emma decided to visit Séby and say goodbye. However, when she tried to talk to him about their relationship, he claimed that they never slept together.

So who did she sleep with?

On the trip home, Emma keeps throwing up, so Camille buys her a pregnancy test, confirming that someone or something has impregnated her.

Did Marianne take on a new form and have sex with Emma? If so, then the demonic spirit could now live inside her unborn child, setting up a freaky family dynamic for season two.

If Marianne isn't renewed for a second season, this twist works well as a surprise ending for the show, but it's hard not to be excited about the prospect of seeing Emma deal with this disturbing revelation in future episodes.

Marianne season 2 trailer: When will we see it?

Since series creator Samuel Bodin hasn't been given the thumbs up yet from Netflix, it might be a while before we see any footage from Marianne season two.

If or when the show is renewed, expect to see the first trailer just a few weeks before the entire series drops, most likely towards the end of 2020.

Marianne season one is now available to watch on Netflix.
