The Port Huron Fire Department has determined a fire at the Exhibit Dispensary & Lounge at 1033 River St. was an accident.

"The cause of the fire has been determined to be accidental-careless disposal of smoking materialsinto a trash receptacle," a news release from the fire department stated Monday. "The fire investigation is closed."

Fire Chief Corey Nicholson said the "smoking materials" were a cigarette. There was no marijuana in the building at the time of the fire, he said.

The building, which was set to open soon as one of the first dispensaries for recreational marijuana in Port Huron, caught fire on Nov. 26.

Port Huron firefighters responded in time to save the building, but Fire Department Lt. Matthew Oleaga said there was smoke damage inside. No one was injured in the fire.

Mark Aubrey, the operator for Exhibit Cannabis, had previously told the Times Herald he planned to have the business open by the end of the year. He did not respond to a request for comment on how the fire will affect the opening.
