Time running out for missing Indonesian submarine as U.S. joins search
BANYUWANGI/DENPASAR, Indonesia (Reuters) -Rescue teams from several countries were battling against time on Friday to find a missing Indonesian Navy submarine lost in the Bali Sea with 53 crew, which would be rapidly running out of oxygen if not already crushed by water pressure. Search helicopters and more navy ships left Bali and a naval base in Java at first light heading to the area where contact was lost with the 44-year-old KRI Nanggala-402 on Wednesday as it prepared to conduct a torpedo drill. "The main priority is the safety of the 53 crew members," President Joko Widodo said late on Thursday.

NASA rover extracts first oxygen from Mars
NASA has announced yet another first on Mars Wednesday, having literally created oxygen out of the red planet's thin air. That's thanks to an experimental device carried by the six-wheeled rover vehicle called Perseverance, that landed there in February. The gadget is called MOXIE and in its first activation, it created 5 grams of oxygen from Mars' atmosphere, which is mostly carbon dioxide. That's enough for an astronaut to breathe for 10 minutes. It may sound small, but that's big news; marking the first experimental extraction of natural resources from another planet - that humans can directly use.NASA says it's the first technology of its kind that may help future missions "live off the land" of another world.Oxygen is needed not only to see humans on Mars someday, it is also crucial for the fuel to get them home.MOXIE's success comes a day after another achievement on Mars with a miniature robot helicopter, NASA pulled off the first controlled powered flight of an aircraft on another planet.

Thousands gather to wish Chad's slain president "a deserved rest"
N'DJAMENA (Reuters) - Thousands of people gathered at the main square in Chad's capital N'Djamena on Friday to pay their respects to the late President Idriss Deby, who was killed while leading his troops against a rebel offensive on Monday. French President Emmanuel Macron, Guinean President Alpha Conde and several other African leaders were expected to attend the funeral, despite rebel warnings they should not attend for security reasons. Deby ruled Chad for more than 30 years and was one of Africa's wiliest political survivors, holding on to power despite rebellions that reached as far as his palace gates.

Syrian missile explodes near Israeli nuclear reactor
A Syrian surface-to-air missile exploded over southern Israel on Thursday, triggering sirens near a secretive nuclear site and prompting retaliatory strikes against Damascus. The Israeli military said the missile, which did not cause any damage or injuries, was fired at an Israeli jet but missed its target and strayed into the Negev desert. "A surface-to-air missile was fired from Syria to Israel's southern Negev," said a spokesman for the Israel Defence Forces [IDF]. "In response, we struck the battery from which the missile was launched and additional surface-to-air batteries in Syria." The missile fired from Syria reportedly landed around 20 miles away from Israel’s Dimona nuclear facility, and comes two weeks after Iran accused Israel of attacking its own Natanz nuclear facility, which was hit by a mysterious explosion. There was some speculation after the missile exploded that it may have been fired by pro-Iran forces in Syria, as a newspaper close to the regime demanded an “eye for an eye” attack on Dimona in an editorial last week. However, an Israeli military official said the missile launched from Syria in the early hours of Thursday morning was not targeting the nuclear site. “There was no intention of hitting the nuclear reactor in Dimona,” said IDF spokesman Hidai Zilberman.
