Marineland vets and dolphins working together

Marineland vets and one of their dolphins join forces and help one another in making sure their dolphins stay healthy!

The Marineland veterinarians are doing an ultrasound exam on one of their dolphins! Veterinarians say that just like humans, dolphins will receive ultrasound exams when the doc wants to get a better look at an internal organ or even a fetus.

Because husbandry training - training for veterinary procedures - is so important to Marineland, they will practice this behavior even when there’s nothing to see! That way, when we do have a medical reason for conducting an ultrasound exam, the dolphin is used to it, comfortable with it, and able to voluntarily participate in the procedure.

Inside the box, and shaded from the sun with a towel, is a screen allowing our veterinarian to see and record images obtained from the external ultrasound probe held against the dolphin’s body.
