Mariners add Marlowe to 40-man roster

Nov. 15—SEATTLE — Cade Marlowe has had a lot of great news happen for him in 2022. One more piece was added on Tuesday, Nov. 15: Marlowe is now a member of the Seattle Mariners' 40-man roster.

Seattle made the announcement on social media Tuesday that it was adding four prospects to its 40-man roster, Marlowe, Prelander Berroa, Isaiah Campbell and Jonatan Clase.

The 40-man deadline had been set for Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. If he had not been added, Marlowe, because of his years of experience in the Minors, would have been eligible for the Rule 5 draft, which would have left him open to be picked up by another team.

By being added to the 40-man roster, Marlowe can be promoted to the Mariners' big league club. No player can be on a Major League roster who is not on the 40-man. Now, if Seattle wanted to replace Marlowe on this list, it would have to grant him free agency, trade him to another club or move him to the 60-day injured list.

Since being drafted in the 20th round in 2019 out of West Georgia, Marlowe's star has risen in a hurry.

He spent 2019 in Class A+ Everett, where he hit .301. Coronavirus shut down the Minors in 2020 and he found himself at Modesto in 2021, then Everett again, which was re-classed as High-A. Hitting well for the whole season, Marlowe spent a single game at Class AAA to close out the year.

In 2022, Marlowe began at AA Arkansas, exploding in the summer for 20 homers, 36 stolen bases and 86 RBIs in 120 games. That earned him a promotion to Tacoma and AAA, where he began to enter serious conversations about a promotion to the Majors.

Marlowe was placed on Seattle's taxi squad for its American League playoff series against Toronto and Houston, available in case of injury. The Seattle Times predicts he will make his MLB debut in 2023.

Mariners' President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto talked about his decision to add Marlowe to the postseason roster in October.

"Cade, he can play defense, he can run and he hits," said Dipoto. This was an easy choice for us, just based on the quality of his defense and the fact that he's a plus runner, and in the postseason those are really key things to have in terms of bench impact."

Before West Georgia and his Minor League career, Marlowe starred for Tiftarea Academy.
