Mario M. Cuomo Bridge lit in orange for hunger relief

The Gov. Mario Cuomo Bridge was lit up in orange to raise awareness for hunger relief Nov. 15, 2023. The initiative was organized by Hillside Food Outreach, a nonprofit that delivers nutritious groceries to low-income and limited mobility families, seniors, and the chronically ill in New York and Connecticut.

Hillside Food Outreach and Orange Bank & Trust helps raise awareness of hunger in Westchester and the region. The Mario M. Cuomo Bridge was lit up in orange Nov. 15 in recognition of this hunger-awareness effort and there was a “viewing” at Sailhouse restaurant in Tarrytown to assist Hillside with its efforts, according to a news release.

Westchester County presented a proclamation to Hillside CEO and founder Kathy Purdy declaring Hillside Food Outreach Day/hunger relief awareness, according to the release.

Hillside serves more than 800 households and 1,775 individuals across New York and Connecticut including elderly residents who find it difficult to travel and carry grocery bags; those who are housebound due sickness or disability; and people with health conditions such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes and hypertension who require nutritious diets. Of Hillside's clients, 40.1% are adults, 34.1% are seniors and 25.8% are children, according to the release.
