Marion County restaurant inspections: Sept. 18-21 critical violations

The Louisiana Department of Health performs regular inspections of restaurants and stores that sell food. These are the local results of those inspections.

The following restaurant inspections with critical violations were conducted by Marion Public Health between Sept. 18 and Sept. 21:

Shell, 587 Delaware Ave., Marion, Sept. 18. PIC not ensuring employees are properly sanitizing equipment and utensils and monitoring of sanitizer parameters (critical, corrected during inspection). Person in charge (PIC) stated that dishes are not sanitized after washing and rinsing. PIC and food employee were shown how to make sanitizer solution and explained the correct process for dishwashing and sanitizing.

Employees are not informed in a verifiable manner of their responsibility to report information about their health (critical repeat, corrected). Did not observe an employee illness policy at the time of inspection. PIC was given copies of the MPH illness policy to have employees review, sign, and keep on file at the facility. TCS foods not being cold held at the proper temperature (critical, corrected). Observed milk in walk-in cooler being cold held at 52 degrees. PIC discarded all milk. The PIC was advised to place new milk shipments in the beer cooler until the walk-in cooler is repaired.

Pizza Hut Restaurant - Delco, 665 Delaware Ave., Marion, Sept. 18. Unapproved chemical sanitizer used on food contact surfaces (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed sanitizer dispenser dispensing quat sanitizer that was below the required concentration. PIC will have food employees make sanitizer with sanitizer tablets until the dispenser has been repaired.

Sonic Drive In, 185 McMahan Blvd., Marion, Sept. 18. Improper bare-hand contact with RTE foods (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed food employee handling cooked ready-to-eat food with bare hands. PIC and food employee were both reminded of handwashing and glove requirements.

Scrappy's Drive-Thru LLC, 2778 Marion-Waldo Road, Marion, Sept. 19. Presence of live insects, rodents and other pests (critical). Observed presence of live cockroaches as well as dead cockroaches in the kitchen. Per the PIC, the kitchen has not been used since the beginning of 2023 for food preparation or sales.

Jimmy John's, 1950 Marion-Mt. Gilead Road, Marion, Sept. 19. Equipment food-contact surfaces or utensils are unclean (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed build-up of debris on ice chute. Unapproved chemical sanitizer used on food contact surfaces (critical, corrected). Observed sanitizer dispenser dispensing quat sanitizer that was below the required concentration. PIC will have food employees hand mix the sanitizer until the dispenser has been repaired.

Rt. 95 Duchess Shoppe #1216, 1881 Marion-Mt. Gilead Road, Marion, Sept. 19. Food not properly protected from contamination by separation, packaging and segregation (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed raw eggs on a shelf above milk in the cooler. TCS foods not being hot held at the proper temperature (critical, corrected). Observed cooked TCS foods below 135 degrees in the sandwich and pizza warming units. PIC discarded the affected foods and adjusted the temperature on the warming units.

Wendy's #21, 1165 Mt. Vernon Ave., Marion, Sept. 21. TCS foods not being hot held at the proper temperature (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed gravy in hot holding well at 104 degrees. PIC discarded the gravy during the inspection and adjusted the temperature on the hot holding unit.

Taco Bell #38898, 1309 Mt. Vernon Ave., Marion, Sept. 21. TCS foods not being cold held at the proper temperature (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed TCS foods above 41 degrees in the prep cooler. PIC moved the food items to another cooler and was advised not to use the prep cooler until it had been repaired.

Subway Sandwich, 1675 Marion Mount Gilead Road, Marion, Sept. 21. Equipment food-contact surfaces or utensils are unclean (critical). Observed build-up of debris on ice chute and in ice machine.

Primrose Retirement Community of Marion, 1550 Wellness Drive, Marion, Sept. 21. Improper bare-hand contact with RTE foods (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed employee taking cake out of a pan with bare-hands. PIC discarded the batch of cake. Equipment food-contact surfaces or utensils are unclean (critical). Observed build-up of debris in ice maker.
