Marion County restaurant inspections: Several schools receive October critical violations

The Louisiana Department of Health performs regular inspections of restaurants and stores that sell food. These are the local results of those inspections.

The following restaurant inspections with critical violations were conducted by Marion Public Health during October:

Buffalo Wild Wings #576, 1573 Marion Mt. Gilead Road, Marion, Oct. 3. Food in contact with an unclean surface or linens (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed handle to be sitting in chicken on the make table. Food not properly protected from contamination by separation, packaging and segregation (critical repeat). Observed pickle container in walk-in cooler to not have a lid on it. Food not properly protected from contamination by separation, packaging and segregation (critical repeat). Observed raw chicken in the walk-in cooler to not have a lid on it. Food in contact with an unclean surface or linens (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed handle sitting in sauce. Equipment food-contact surfaces or utensils are unclean (critical). Observed several clean dishes in storage to be dirty. Hot water for mechanical sanitization is below required temperature (critical). Observed dish washing machine to only reach a maximum of 148 degrees. Equipment food-contact surfaces or utensils are unclean (critical). Observed cutting boards at make table to be dirty. Food contact surfaces not easily cleanable (critical). Observed food-contact equipment to be stored on single-use item.

Genovas Pizza, 698 Richmond Ave., Marion, Oct. 4. Food not properly protected from contamination by separation, packaging and segregation (critical repeat, corrected during inspection). Observed lettuce in cooler to not have lid on it.

Van Java Hibachi, 526 W. Center St., Marion, Oct. 5. Food not properly protected from contamination by separation, packaging and segregation (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed several food items in walk-in cooler to not have lids. Food not properly protected from contamination by separation, packaging and segregation (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed raw chicken to be stored above beef. Food not properly protected from contamination by separation, packaging and segregation (critical). Observed rice container lid to be damaged. Correct by Oct. 12. Chlorine sanitizing solution at incorrect temperature and/or concentration (critical). Observed the dishwashing machine to not be distributing chlorine. Facility will be using three-bay sink until further notice. Correct by Oct. 12. Refrigerated, ready-to-eat, TCS foods not properly date marked (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed several items in the walk-in and reach-in coolers to not have date marks.

Arby's, 175 McMahan Blvd., Marion, Oct. 5. Handwashing sink is being used for purposes other than handwashing (critical, corrected during inspection ). Observed tongs being stored in the front handwashing sink.

Mary's Dairy Bar, 455 S. Main St., New Bloomington, Oct. 7. Equipment food-contact surfaces or utensils are unclean (critical). Observed drying mats to be used for clean dishes. These mats were dirty to sight and touch and cloth fabrics such as these harbor a lot of bacteria. Correct by Oct. 13. Refrigerated, ready-to-eat, TCS foods not properly date marked (critical repeat, corrected during inspection). Observed several foods in coolers to not have date marks. Ready-to-eat, TCS food not properly discarded when required (critical, corrected during inspection). Employees stated that they regularly cook food in bulk, freeze it, then reheat it. This was being done for two items that were thawing in the cooler during the time of inspection. This facility is not allowed to engage in the act of cooling down and reheating foods as they are only a level three license. Person in charge (PIC) disposed of foods.

Marion General Hospital Cafeteria, 1000 McKinley Park Blvd., Marion, Oct. 19. Handwashing sink is being used for purposes other than handwashing (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed there to be debris in the handwashing sink near the café serving line.

Liberty Elementary, 1932 Whetstone River Road N., Caledonia, Oct. 19. Food package(s) received in poor condition (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed dented cans of spaghetti sauce in the dry storage area. PIC pulled dented cans from the shelf for discard. Quaternary ammonium sanitizing solution at incorrect temperature, concentration, and/or water hardness (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed the sani bucket reading too high of a concentration.

James A. Garfield Elementary School, 1170 Brookside Drive, Marion, Oct. 20. Quaternary ammonium sanitizing solution at incorrect temperature, concentration, and/or water hardness (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed the sanitizer buckets not reading the required concentration. PIC emptied and refilled buckets to read 200 ppm.

Heritage Elementary, 720 Columbus-Sandusky Road N., Marion, Oct. 24. Food not properly protected from contamination by separation, packaging and segregation (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed milk crates sitting directly on the floor.

WalMart #1750, 1546 Marion-Mt. Gilead Road, Marion, Oct. 24. Food package(s) received in poor condition (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed milk gallon to be damaged in some way. The gallon container had milk on it, and it was hard to tell if milk was spilled on the package or if the packaged had leaked. PIC removed milk container from shelves. Food package(s) received in poor condition (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed several dented cans on shelves. PIC removed them from shelves during the time of inspection.

Kroger Company N 808, 1428 Marion-Waldo Road, Marion, Oct. 25. Food package(s) received in poor condition (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed there to be several dented cans on shelves. PIC removed dented cans. Working containers of poisonous or toxic materials not properly labeled (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed chemical spray bottle in the Starbucks area to not have a label with a common name on it. Manual wash solution not being maintained at 110 degrees or above (critical). Observed three-bay sink in the meat slicing area to not produce the proper temperature.

Ulyssis S. Grant Middle School, 420 Presidential Way, Marion, Oct, 25. Chlorine sanitizing solution at incorrect temperature and/or concentration (critical). Sanitizer was not reading the correct concentration. PIC placed a work order to get the issue resolved.

River Valley High School, 4280 Marion-Mt. Gilead Road, Caledonia, Oct. 26. Hot water for mechanical sanitization is below required temperature (critical). Dishwasher was not reaching 160 degrees. PIC placed a work order for the unit and will be using three-bay sink until the dishwasher is repaired.

River Valley Middle School, 4334 Marion-Mt. Gilead Road, Caledonia, Oct. 27. Food package(s) received in poor condition (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed a dented can of tomato soup in the dry storage. PIC explained their process for dented cans and discarded the can.

Meijer Store #111, 2153 Marion-Mt. Gilead Road, Marion, Oct. 27. Food package(s) received in poor condition (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed several dented cans on shelves. PIC removed cans. Presence of live insects, rodents, and other pests (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed a live bird flying around the bakery area. PIC contacted their pest removable agency to have it removed. Facility is currently under construction, so the outer openings to the facility are more exposed than normal.
