Marion County This Week: Blues shows at Shovel City, McKinley Park

If you're a fan of blues and jazz, there's a couple of opportunities to hear some great bands this week in Marion County.

The Central Blues Co. (CBC) and the North Side Jazz Band, both based in Central Ohio, each have shows planned this week in Marion. And an up and coming Columbus musician will be in Caledonia on Saturday night.

CBC at Shovel City Drinkery

Central Blues Co. is set to appear at Shovel City Drinkery, 181 N. Main St. in Marion, at 7 p.m. on Saturday. It's part of Shovel City Drinkery's Patio Party that includes Mr. Bill's Wood Fired Pizza food truck, which will be on site from 5 to 9 p.m.

Central Blues Co. is a blues/rock trio featuring talented musicians Jason Allwood (vocals/guitar/harmonica), Dion Worrell (bass/vocals), and Timmy Hill (drums). The band plays "anything from Jimi Hendrix to Howlin' Wolf to Muddy Waters, ZZ Top, BB King, Allman Brothers, Joe Bonamassa, while including original music as well." The group's debut self-titled CD was named the 2018 “Best Self-Produced Blues CD” in Columbus by the Columbus Blues Alliance.

Summer Concerts in McKinley Park continue

The North Side Jazz Band is the featured act at this weekend's installment of the Summer Concerts in McKinley Park series, presented by the Marion Concert Band. The free show begins at 7 p.m. Sunday at McKinley Park. Folks attending should bring a lawn chair and their own snacks and drinks.

David Steele, member of the North Side Jazz Band, said "the group specializes in 'hot jazz' from the 1920s era with instrumentation of trumpet, trombone, clarinet, piano, banjo, tuba, and drums." He said the band has previously played in the summer concert series and welcomes the opportunity to do so again.
