Marion man heads to prison after pleading guilty to aggravated robbery

A Marion man will spend between 20 and 27 years in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of aggravated robbery.

Cedrick E. Riley Jr., age 19, entered the guilty plea on Aug. 4 in Marion County Common Pleas Court before Judge Warren T. Edwards. He pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated robbery, both first-degree felonies, with 3-year gun specifications. Judge Edwards also ordered that Riley must submit to a period of post-release control lasting between 2 to 5 years following his release from prison.

“This case came together after phenomenal police work from the Marion Police Department. I hope this case sends the message that violent crime will not be tolerated in our community,” Marion County Prosecutor Ray Grogan said.

Riley was accused of robbing the Domino's Pizza on East Center Street in Marion at gunpoint around 12:30 a.m. on Oct. 25, 2021, according to a press release issued by the Marion County Prosecutor's Office. Officials said that Riley took "several hundred dollars in cash" from the Domino's.

On Oct. 26, 2021, Riley then committed a robbery at gunpoint at Pop's Party Store on North Main Street in Marion. According to the prosecutor's press release, Riley entered the store around 8:30 p.m., struck the store owner and knocked him to the ground, then fled the scene without taking any money.

Marion Police arrested Riley on Nov. 1, 2021. The U.S. Marshal's Office of the Northern District of Ohio offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to Riley's arrest.

“I want to thank the Marion Police Department, and the many officers and detectives who worked on this case. I also want to thank the victims who came forward to send the message that we will not tolerate these crimes," said Grogan.

Riley was originally indicted by the Marion County grand jury on Nov. 17, 2021, on the following charges: one count of aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony; and five counts of kidnapping, each count a first-degree felony. Each charge included a 3-year gun specification because Riley used a firearm in the commission of the crimes.

Grogan said Riley remains incarcerated at the Multi-County Correctional Center in Marion awaiting transport to the Correctional Reception Center in Orient where he will be processed into the state prison system.
