Marist Catholic girls soccer wins first state title in program history

HILLSBORO — The Marist Catholic girls soccer team entered Saturday's 4A state championship final in search of its first state title in program history.

No. 1-ranked Marist, which was competing in its third championship final in four years, ended that search after the Spartans secured a 4-0 shutout victory over No. 2 Hidden Valley at Liberty High School.

"Three out of the last four years, and we finally did it," Marist head coach Stefan Schroffner said. "I give all the credit to the players. Great teams are made up of great players. That's the key and these are truly great players."

In 2020, Marist and North Marion tied in the Class 4A Showcase championship after the OSAA canceled all postseason tournaments that year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The year prior, Marist lost one-nil to Woodburn in the state final.

In Saturday's game, the Spartans took a 1-0 lead early in the first half when senior Paige Meador perfectly assisted a pass to junior Cloe Chase, who knocked in the goal in the 29th minute.

Marist's offensive strength shined in the second half with a penalty kick goal from the team's leading scorer senior Sela Freeman in the 45th minute. During the final five minutes of the match, Meador and Freeman each connected with unassisted goals.

"I'm super excited I was able to contribute to program history," said Freeman, who capped her senior season with 32 goals.
