Mark Ruffalo on Why He and Jennifer Garner Grew Apart After '13 Going On 30'

13 Going On 30 is an iconic rom-com. The coming-of-age story includes the unforgettable "Thriller" routine, many quotable moments, and, of course, great onscreen chemistry between Mark Ruffalo's Matty and Jennifer Garner's Jenna. But while Ruffalo and Garner may have had a blast filming the memorable flick, apparently their friendship didn't continue on after the cameras stopped rolling.

During a 2014 episode of Andy Cohen's Watch What Happens Live, Ruffalo was asked about the status of his friendship with Garner. It was then the Hulk actor revealed that he and Garner didn't really stay in touch after the movie dropped in 2004.

"We had a great time together, and I think we would, but then Ben [Affleck] came on the scene and that was the end of that," Ruffalo explained.

Cohen then jokingly replied, "I heard he doesn't allow her to have male friends," before clarifying, "I made that up!"

It's important to note that even though Ruffalo mentioned Garner's relationship with Affleck—whom she reportedly first started seeing in 2004—he never commented further on why they lost touch.

In 2000, Ruffalo married Sunrise Coigney, whom he now shares three kids with: Keen, Odette, and Bella. Meanwhile, Garner married Affleck in 2005 and had kids Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel.

Garner and Affleck divorced in 2018, and the actress is reportedly now seeing businessman John C. Miller, while Affleck is making headlines for rekindling his previous romance with Jennifer Lopez—now his wife.

Though Ruffalo and Garner may have drifted apart all those years ago, it looks as though they have recently reconnected. They worked together on the 2022 science-fiction flick The Adam Project. In the film, the duo portray the parents of the lead character, Adam, who is played by both Walker Scobell and Ryan Reynolds.

Ruffalo tweeted a reference to 13 Going On 30 while on the set of The Adam Project. It looks like the two have made their friendship Twitter official.

What's more, when Garner shared a fun Halloween clip on Instagram of two dancers doing the "Thriller" dance, she made sure to include her 13 Going On 30 costars Ruffalo and Judy Greer in her caption.

"Hey @missjudygreer, hey @markruffalo— do we still have this in us? 🎃🧟♀️ #HappyHalloween!," Garner wrote.

In response, Ruffalo wrote back, "They have far better rhythm than Matty 😂🕺🏻."
