Mark Zuckerberg Reveals a Home Invention to Help His Wife Sleep

The Facebook founder used a wooden box for his simple yet effective invention

The inventor of Facebook is taking his talents from the tech world to the home realm. Mark Zuckerberg recently revealed that he created something called a “Sleep Box” to help his pediatrician wife, Priscilla Chan, get some quality shut-eye.

“Being a mom is hard, and since we’ve had kids Priscilla has had a hard time sleeping through the night,” the billionaire wrote on Facebook on April 27 alongside a picture of the invention. “She’ll wake up and check the time on her phone to see if the kids might wake up soon, but then knowing the time stresses her out and she can’t fall back asleep.”

The 34-year-old, who shares two daughters, Maxima (“Max”), 3, and August, 18 months, with Chan, said that his wife’s stress inspired him to create a small wooden box that emits a dim light between 6 and 7 a.m. The light is “visible enough that if she sees it, she'll know it's an OK time for one of us to get the kids, but faint enough that the light won't wake her up if she's still sleeping,” added Zuckerberg. “And since it doesn't show the time, if she wakes up in the middle of the night, she knows to just go back to sleep without having to worry about what time it is.”

His invention has been working well. “So far this has worked better than I expected and she can now sleep through the night,” he wrote. “As an engineer, building a device to help my partner sleep better is one of the best ways I can think of to express my love and gratitude.”

And it seems the tech entrepreneur isn’t the only one interested in the handmade product. Since he created it, several friends have reached out to Zuckerberg wanting one as well. So, he’s encouraging “another entrepreneur” to “run with this and build sleep boxes for more people.”
