On the market in Palm Beach: An updated 1960s-era home is priced at $6.95 million on the North End

Alex and Charlotte Ross Canet were the new parents of a baby boy when they found their Palm Beach home at 240 El Dorado Lane in 2020.

“A large draw for us, it was move-in-ready,” Charlotte says. “I had my son, Nicolas, on May 28, and we bought our home two months later. We didn’t have to do any work to it. It was perfect for our family at the time.”

The previous owners worked with designer Ellen Kavanaugh and finished the interiors beautifully, she adds.

“It was well appointed with Phillip Jeffries grasscloth wall coverings in four of the rooms, and another two rooms have beautiful wallpaper. The floors are Haifa limestone, and I fell in love with the beautiful stand of bamboo that we see from our dining room and family room,” Charlotte says.

But time has marched on, and the Canets have added another child to their family — daughter Sophie — and moved to a larger home. That means they have put the four-bedroom, three-bathroom home on the market. With 3,134 square feet of living space, inside and out, it is listed with Douglas Elliman Real Estate agent Gary Pohrer and priced at $6.95 million.

Built in 1960 on a quarter-acre lot, the North End house has Bermuda-style architecture with Regency influences. The couple liked the location so much that their new house is also on the North End.

“Our El Dorado home is one block from the beach access and 2 miles equidistant from Royal Poinciana (Way) and the Sailfish Club (of Florida),” Charlotte says. “In the mornings, I could walk with my children and dog along the Lake Trail in the shade, and in the evenings, I could walk along North County Road in the shade.”

The floor plan places the living room and dining room south of the entry. On the east side of the house are the main bedroom suite and two guest bedrooms that share a bathroom.

On the west side are the pool-view family room, the kitchen, the two-car attached garage and a two-bedroom suite that the Canets used as guest quarters and a pool cabana.

“It’s near the pool and is great when we are seeking shade,” Charlotte explains.

The floor plan also was well suited to the needs of her family, she adds.

“We liked the separation of our bedrooms,” Charlotte says, speaking about the east-wing bedrooms. “We have privacy from the entertaining areas of our home.

“Also, I really like the landscaping at the front of our house, and it’s a very quiet street, especially at night.”

The Canets recently replaced the house’s roof. And they earned approval from the Architectural Commission for two as-yet-unbuilt projects — a pergola by the pool and a shorter driveway. Those plans will transfer with the sale of the house.

Alex is vice president of ShippingTree, a Cypress, California-based provider of cloud-based logistics and e-commerce fulfillment services. Charlotte is a freelance writer. The two met at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, and lived in New York City and California’s Venice Beach before moving to Palm Beach, where Charlotte has deep family ties to the Estate Section.

In the mid-1900s, her great-grandfather, Amory Haskell, lived in a 1920s-era Marion Simms Wyeth-designed house at 540 S. Ocean Blvd., which was later owned by the late singer Jimmy Buffett and his wife, Jane. That house was later demolished to make way for a mansion built by British insurance magnate and real estate developer Sir Peter Wood.

Charlotte’s grandparents, Edmund Burke Ross and Margaret Haskell Ross, met in Palm Beach after World War II, and her father’s grandmother, Parthenia Ross, lived at 320 El Vedado Road. Her father, E. Burke Ross Jr., once lived at 172 South Ocean Blvd., another 1920s house designed by Wyeth.

“Alex and I had our wedding reception at my dad’s home in April 2017,” she says.

She adds: “It was just a matter of time before we moved here. I came to Palm Beach for vacations my entire life.”
