Highlights of Jan. 10 meeting of Marlboro Township trustees:

Department reports

Fiscal Officer Tracy Ferrett – Trustees approved a motion, after Ferrett’s presentation, to amend Dec. 27, 2021, Resolution #21-192 to carry forward the ending 2021 cash fund balance total to 2022 from $1,747,514.83 to $1,748,057.97 as a result of additional receipts posted in 2021.

Fire Capt. Hal Lehman of the Marlboro Township Volunteer Fire Co.:

• In December 2021, department logged 61 responses. These included 11 fire responses with $2,000 loss and 50 EMS calls with two motor vehicle crashes. As of meeting department has had 29 runs more than the same month last year. For the year, the department amassed 88 runs more than last year, an 18.7% increase.

• Trustee Ken Eddleman asked about the “junk cars” still located on the property. Lehman said the training was complete, and the cars were to be gone within a week, depending on Marlboro Towing’s schedule.

Police Chief Ron Devies:

• For December 2021, the department responded to 119 calls for service. For 2021, there were 1,678 calls (an average of five per day) and the cruisers patrolled 73,504 miles and used 3677.7 gallons of gasoline.

• Devies recommended appointing Izel Oneal Hines as a police cadet to be sworn in Jan. 24. Hines is enrolled in the Stark State Police Academy and has been interviewed twice. He has also passed the psychological evaluation, along with a background investigation conducted by Officer Samaniego. Trustees approved the appointment.

• Trustees approved a motion to promote part-time officer Marc Merriweather to a full-time position, to help cover shifts and to help in the event a full-time officer leaves to take a position at the Millersburg Police Department.

Road Foreman Rick Bergert – Not present, and there was no report.

Zoning Inspector Ed Stanley – Stanley reported that for 2021, there were 13 new homes (vs. 9 in 2020), 34 permits issued, and 33 land splits. Zoning Commission was to hear a variance request from Dollar General to reduce available parking at the location.

Trustee reports

• Trustee Wayne Schillig – Reported receiving a copy of a public notice for the proposed development of Congress Lake Wetland Mitigation Bank from a resident of Pinedale Street. He confirmed that nobody had received a copy at the township, which he felt was unusual because usually the trustees receive these notices.

• Trustee John Battershell – Not present, and did not leave a report.

• Trustee Ken Eddleman – Stated that during December, he had other obligations but thanked the trustees and department heads for filling in while he was absent.

Other business

• Trustees paid bills in the amount of $29,697.68.

• Ferrett stated that several Hartville Hardware bills would need to be approved when Eddleman and Battershell are present, due to Schillig’s employment there.

Organizational meeting

All decisions retroactive to Jan. 1.

• John Battershell will serve as the board president for 2022, and Wayne Schillig will be vice president.

• Trustees approved the following moves on salaries for employees:

• Road foreman, 12% increase.

• Road truck driver/laborer, No change at this time, but an increase will be considered at the end of 90-day probationary period.

• Road employee-seasonal, No change at this time.

• Police chief and full and part time officers, 15% increase.

• Administrative assistant, 10% increase.

• Zoning inspector (contracted), No change at this time
