Marlin girls pick up home win, road loss over weekend
Jan. 29—MITCHELL — After taking down Sioux Center 3-0 on Friday, the Mitchell Marlins girls hockey team stumbled against Aberdeen, dropping the contest 3-1 on the road Sunday.
The Marlins scored one goal each period Friday, with Reese Amick striking in the first and third periods, and Makenna Tronnes picking up a goal in the second. Livaya Mimmack and Olivia Nockels assisted on Tronnes' goal, while both of Amick's were unassisted.
Defensively, Sadie Kludt turned away all nine shots the Storm put on net, while Allison Moore faced 28 shots from the Marlins, saving 25 of them. It was the second time in three games that Kludt earned a shutout for the Marlins.
On Sunday, the Marlins struck first when Brynlee Sabers picked up her 31st goal of the season in the second period off an assist from Amick. But Aberdeen answered 24 seconds later, as Sydney Hofer tied the game up. Lauren Scheel and Allison Woehl added two more goals in the second for the Cougars, giving them a 3-1 lead they held onto until the final buzzer.
Morgan Jones picked up two assists for Aberdeen, while Reece Ermer and Kailyn Poppen each had one.
Kludt turned away 37 of the 40 Cougar shots, good for a .925 save percentage in the loss, while Chloe Vikander made nine saves against 10 shots from Mitchell. Each team went on two power plays but were unsuccessful on both.
Mitchell (8-6) is home against Rushmore for a pair of games on Saturday, Feb. 11, and Sunday, Feb. 12, to close out the regular season.
