Marlington Alumni Association awarded a record $121,900 in scholarships at its recent annual banquet.
MAA President Michelle (Vaughan) Bakan (’81) greeted nearly 300 attendees at the first in-person event in two years. The banquet was conducted virtually in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Bakan also reported MAA assets total more than $2.4 million.
Frank Carozzi (‘83), chairman of the Outstanding Alumni Committee, introduced the outstanding alumni award winners from this year, along with those from 2020 and 2021.
Ron Davis (’51) won the 2020 Outstanding Alumni Award. He recounted the friendships and meaningful relationships from his early years at Marlboro High School. He cited his Marlboro teachers and his father, Ford C. Davis, as role models, saying they prepared him for his role as a fighter pilot with the U.S. Air Force, and later as president of Buckeye Packaging Company after his father’s early death.
Mike Pauli (’68) won the 2021 Outstanding Alumni Award. He credited Marlington, his wife, Linda (Hoover) Pauli (’68) and his family for affording him a richly blessed life. Pauli said his career and business have given him the opportunity to train and work with many fellow Marlington graduates. He has owned Pauli Electric since 1975.
Steve Matthew (’79) was won the 2022 Outstanding Alumni Award. He shared memories from Marlboro Elementary School, Marlington Middle School and Marlington High School. He said winning the John D. Liber Service Award in 1979 was impactful, and said he received a valuable education in the district. Matthew acknowledged Bill Liber (’65), and announced he would make a gift to the John D. Liber Fund. Matthew is president of Wooster Hydrostatics and Fluid Power Solutions.
The group then awarded 57 scholarships to 43 students. Below are the scholarships and the identity of students who were honored:
Andrea Dager received the Elizabeth Albright Education Scholarship and the Louise Bingham Memorial Scholarship. She will study Middle Childhood Education and Music at the University of Mount Union.
Hayden Sambroak will attend Stark State University to study Electrical Engineering. He received the Battershell Family Scholarship.
Wyatt Madison also received a Battershell Family Scholarship and will study Welding Technology at Stark State College.
Ashley Closky received the Mary Louise Bixler Education Scholarship and will attend the University of Cincinnati to study Early Childhood Education.
Three students received the Richard W. and Annabelle Bohaychyk Memorial Scholarship. Ella Wright will attend Kent State University to become a Radiology Technician. Zachary Dine will study Electrical Engineering at the University of Cincinnati, and Georgia Taylor will study Dental Hygiene at Stark State University. Dine also received the Ed and Linda Kuvlesky Scholarship.
Janaan Alihassa received the Gerald P. Burke Scholarship and will pursue a major in Biology and a Minor in Spanish from the University of Mount Union.
Mallory Bennett received the Frank and Anna Carozzi Memorial Scholarship and will study Mathematics at Ohio State University.
Madison Nicholls received the recently established Ede Carretta Family Scholarship and will study Elementary Education/Intervention Specialist at Walsh University.
Samuel Dine received the General John Churchill Academic Warrior Award and the Ford C. Davis Scholarship. He will study Electrical Engineering at the University of Cincinnati.
Brianna Kurtz plans to study Biochemistry/Pre-Pharmacy at Ohio State University. She received the Class of 1990 Scholarship and the Hastings Scholarship.
Madison Wade also received a Class of 1990 Scholarship and a Class of 1968 Scholarship. She plans to study Psychology and Digital Media at Kent State University.
Aidan Dennison is joining the United States Marine Corp and received the Class of 1966 Military Award.
Kailee Hudgins, Claire Gerber and Alexis Hunt each received a Coastal Pet-Stout Family Scholarship. Hudgins will study Biological Sciences in Wildlife & Conservation at Ohio State University. Gerber will study Flight Technology and Operations at Bowling Green State University, and Hunt will study Microbiology at Ohio Wesleyan University.
Walter Bungard will pursue Chemical Engineering at the University of Akron and received a Ford C. Davis Scholarship.
Hailey Confalone received the Harold (Bud) and Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Devies Scholarship and will study Nursing at the University of Akron.
Caleb Carr received the Howard and Ruthann Dickerhoof Memorial Scholarship and will pursue a Bachelor’s of Science in Neuroscience at Kent State University.
Walter Bungard and Lauren Keithley each received a Marlington Alumni Association Duke Scholarship. Walter will study Chemical Engineering at the University of Akron and Lauren will study Recreational Therapy at Texas State University.
Taylor Maurer received the Lee and Carolyn Gabric Scholarshi. Maurer will study Nursing at Aultman College.
Lance Beachy received the Govern-Schisler Family Scholarship to study Computer Science or Electrical Engineering at the University of Akron.
Josilynn Scheible will attend the University of Akron to study History and received the Barbara Yoder Hall Memorial Scholarship.
Noah Graham received both the Thomas Hazen Memorial Scholarship and the Howard F. and Trudy S. Kitzmiller Student Athlete Award. He will attend Walsh University to study Science/Pre-Physical Therapy.
Mykah Kackley will study Fashion Design at Kent State University. She received the Kimi Korleski Memorial Scholarship.
Taylor Maurer, Logan Waite, Chance Gandee and Wyatt Madison each received a James Krabill Memorial Scholarship. Maurer will study Nursing at Aultman College, Waite will study Conservation Biology at Kent State University, Gandee will study to be an Electrician at the JATC Electrician School, and Madison will study Welding Technology at Stark State College. Gandee also received the one of the first Ed and Linda Kuvlesky Scholarships.
Samantha Ryan received the Lexington Twp. Volunteer Fire Dept. In Memory of Berkley Barker. Samantha will study Nursing at Kent State University.
From the generosity of alumni, friends, and families, four students received Marlington Alumni Association Scholarships. Allison Landon will study Environmental Science and Biochemistry at Waynesburg University in PA, Konnor Jackson will study Computer Science at the University of Akron, William Lanzer plans to study Psychology at Walsh University, and Alec Goodwin will attend the Williams Honor College at the University of Akron in the Computer Science track, College of Engineering and Polymer Science.
Danny Grimes received the Wayne and Bertha McAlister Scholarship and will study Engineering at Ohio University.
Jacob Charlton received the McIntosh Family Scholarship and will study Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.
Autumn Schillig received the Donald Moore Memorial Scholarship and will attend the Alliance Career Center to become a Licensed Practical Nurse.
Jayden Mitchell will attend Malone University to study Pediatric Nursing and received the Pete Moulin Scholarship.
Michael Stauffer will study Computer Engineering and received the Rita Moulin Scholarship.
Garret Odey received the Franklin L. (Butch) Muniz Baseball Scholarship and will study Mechanical Engineering at Notre Dame College.
Luke Chunko received the Robert E. and William E. Patton Scholarship and will attend the University of Mount Union to study Engineering.
Ariana Painter received the Ramser Scholarship. She will major in Biochemistry and Minor in Spanish at Kent State University.
Connor Evanich and Mallory Bennett each received the Scott and Cheryl Robertson Scholarship. Evanich will pursue a master’s in Business and Bennett will study Mathematics at Ohio University.

Kailee Hudgins received the Howard and Berdine Strouble Scholarship a Kailee will study Biological Sciences in Wildlife & Conservation at The Ohio State University.
Melanie Hackney will study Interior Design at Kent State University. She received the Hal and Ruth Sweitzer Scholarship.
Logan Waite received the Carol Teutsch Memorial Scholarship and will study Conservation Biology and Environmental Studies.
Lauren Keithley and Madison Nicholls received the Thomas Family Scholarship. Keithley will study Recreational Therapy at Texas State University. Nicholls will attend Walsh University to study Elementary Education.
