Marlington Alumni Association awards $123,400 in scholarships

Marlington Alumni Association honored two alumnuses and awarded a record $123,400 in scholarships at its annual banquet at The Hartville Kitchen.

More than 300 guests were on hand for the meeting that spotlighted the classes of 1998, 1973 and 1953, celebrating their 25th, 50th and 70th reunions, respectively.

On hand were Marlington Local Schools Superintendent Dan Swisher, school board members Karen Humphries, Mark Ryan, Cathy Krupko and Jonathan Swift, along with Marlington High School Principal Michael Farrell, and guidance counselors Meredith Joyce and Breanne Arrington.

Board member Carl Battershell (’66) honored Tom Swartz (’66) with special recognition, noting Swartz’s commitment to the organization and exceptional efforts in raising private support for scholarships.

President Michelle (Vaughan) Bakan (’81) reported to the assembled crowd that Marlington Alumni Association currently has assets totaling $2,441,269.

Kevin Krabill (’86) introduced Clyde Lepley (’68) as the recipient of the 2023 Outstanding Alumni Award. Lepley shared fond memories from his years as a student and athlete in Marlington Schools, and his years as an educator and administrator in the district. He encouraged graduates to work hard at the things they enjoy, citing his years playing basketball as a model for discipline, effort and success. Lepley graduated from University of Mount Union, where he was a three-year letterman. He earned his master’s from Youngstown State University and attended Ohio State University, Ashland University, Franciscan University of Steubenville and Walsh University for post-master’s studies. In 2008, he retired from Louisville Public Schools as superintendent.

The meeting continued 48 students receiving 62 scholarships to 48 students. Awards went to:

Caden Bates received the Donald Moore Memorial Scholarship and Franklin L. (Butch) Muniz Baseball Scholarship. He will attend Bowling Green State University to pursue a degree in Exercise Science with an Athletic Training background.

Connor Battershell received the Ford C. Davis Scholarship. He will attend the University of Cincinnati to pursue a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.

Jordan Beggs will attend Malone University to pursue a bachelor's degree in computer science with a concentration in cybersecurity and received the Frank and Anna Carozzi Memorial Scholarship.

Cohen Boyce, recipient of the Battershell Family Scholarship, will attend The University of Mount Union to major in Business.

Ashton Brady received the Ed and Linda Kuvlesky ‘Blue Collar’ Scholarship and will study with the UA Local 94 Plumbers & Pipefitters Joint Apprenticeship to earn his certification in plumbing.

Ava Collins, recipient of the James Krabill Memorial Scholarship, will attend Cleveland State University to study pre-med.

Abigail Corlett received the Elizabeth Albright Education Scholarship and the Mary Louise Bixler Education Scholarship. She will attend Youngstown State University, where she will study Primary/Primary Intervention Specialist Education.

Claire Cox will attend the University of Akron to study Exercise Science. Claire will be on the swim and dive teams at UA. She received the James Krabill Memorial Scholarship and the Gulling Family Scholarship.

Drew Denham also received the James Krabill Memorial Scholarship. He will attend The University of Akron to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science.

Evan Dennison received the Hal and Ruth Sweitzer Scholarship and will attend The University of Akron to major in Chemistry and Music.

Hunter Evans will attend Mount Vernon Nazarene University to study Business Administration & Accounting. He received the Rita Moulin Scholarship.

Isabella Graham received the Howard F. and Trudy S. Kitzmiller Student-Athlete Scholarship. Isabella will attend the University of Cincinnati to study Exercise Science/Pre-Physical Therapy.

Koryn Greiner received the Class of 1990 Scholarship and will attend Kent State University to study Economics and Finance.

Maxwell Heavner will attend the University of Cincinnati to study Business and cybersecurity. He received the Ford C. Davis Scholarship.

Noah Holbrook will continue to build his pressure-washing business and will pursue an associate degree. He received the Ed and Linda Kuvlesky ‘Blue Collar’ Scholarship.

Blake Howard received the Marlington Alumni Association Scholarship and will study Business at the University of Mount Union.

Emma Jackson also received the Marlington Alumni Association Scholarship. She will attend West Virginia Wesleyan College to study computer science.

Kameron Keene received the Lexington Twp. Volunteer Fire Department Scholarship, established in memory of Berkley Barker, and the Coastal Pet-Stout Family Scholarship. Kameron will attend Stark State College to study Fire Science/Emergency Medical Services.

Rebecca Kuhlmann will attend Ohio University to study Business. She received the Govern/Shisler Family Scholarship.

Tyler Kunz received the Howard and Ruthann Dickerhoof Memorial Scholarship and the Lee and Carolyn Gabric Scholarship. He will attend Waynesburg University to pursue a double major in Environmental Science and Children/Youth Ministries.

Benjamin Lacher received the McIntosh Family Scholarship. He will study Mechanical Engineering for Technology at the University of Toledo.

Elliot Lanzer received the Ramser Scholarship and will study Film and Video Production.

Theresa Long will study Nursing at Kent State University. She received the Pete Moulin Scholarship.

Natalie Maiorana received the Class of 1990 Scholarship and the Melvin J. Snode Memorial Scholarship. She will attend The University of Mount Union to become a Physician Assistant.

Jacob Marriner received the Marlington Alumni Duke Scholarship and will attend Kent State University to major in Entrepreneurship with a minor in marketing.

Elizabeth Mason also received the Marlington Alumni Association Scholarship. She will attend The University of Mount Union to play basketball and run track while pursuing her degree.

Ashlyn Maurer received the James Krabill Memorial Scholarship and will attend Kent State University to earn a degree in Biology and pre-dentistry.

Timothy Mayle received the Howard and Berdine Strouble Scholarship. He will attend Kent State University to study Business Management.

Caden McFarland will study Sports Administration at Kent State University. He received the Hastings Scholarship.

Shaylie Miller received the Louise Bingham Memorial Scholarship and the Thomas Family Scholarship. She will attend Kent State University to major in Education and minor in art.

Lexi Miller received the Scott and Cheryl Robertson Scholarship. She will major in Business Management at Kent State University.

Nash Minor will attend Johns Hopkins University to study Cellular and Molecular Biology. He received the Gerald P. Burke Scholarship and plans to become an orthopedic surgeon.

Marta Miranda received the Mary Louise Bixler Education Scholarship and the Barbara Yoder Hall Memorial Scholarship. She will pursue a Bachelors of Arts degree from the Jetter School of Professional Studies majoring in Elementary Education, with a minor in music and creative writing at Mount Vernon Nazarene University.

Camryn Mitchell received the Harold (Bud) and Betty Devies Memorial Scholarship and will attend the University of Mount Union to study Nursing.

Megan Montgomery received the Ede Carretta Memorial Scholarship; and the Marlington Alumni Duke Scholarship. She will study Criminology at Bowling Green State University.

Charles Mort received the Class of 1966 Military Award. He has enlisted in the United States Marine Corps for 5 years.

Ethan Moss received the Coastal Pet-Stout Family Scholarship and the Mike and Linda Pauli Family Scholarship. Ethan has enlisted in the Ohio National Guard and will join the apprenticeship program at Ohio Edison to become a lineman.

Lauren Price received the Kimi Korleski Memorial Scholarship and the Pontius Family Scholarship. She will attend Heidelberg University to double major in Biochemistry/pre-med and Musical Theater.

Cayla Raber will attend Kent State University. She received the Carol Teutsch Memorial Scholarship.

Rolando Ramirez received the Wayne and Bertha McAlister Scholarship and attend The University of Akron. Rolando will pursue a career researching pharmaceuticals.

Spenser Rozich received the Ed and Linda Kuvlesky ‘Blue Collar’ Scholarship. He will attend the Culinary Institute of America.

Cooper Ryan received the Richard W. and Annabelle Bohaychyk Memorial Scholarship and the Ed and Linda Kuvlesky ‘Blue Collar’ Scholarship. He will pursue a Mechatronics/Mechanical Engineering degree from Kent State University.

Douglas Sanor received the Marlington Alumni Association Scholarship. He will attend the Williams Honors College at the University of Akron to pursue a degree in Mathematics.

Thomas Skelding V received the Robert E. and William E. Patton Scholarship. He will attend the University of Kentucky to triple major in Business, Accounting, and Marketing or Actuary Science while playing baseball for the Wildcats.

Chase Strebel received the Thomas Hazen Memorial Scholarship. He will study Media Arts Production at Ohio University.

Valerie Stroup will attend the University of Mount Union to study Biochemistry and Computer Science. She received the Class of 1968 Scholarship.

Maria Warner received the Scott and Cheryl Robertson Scholarship. She will study at Malone University while also playing golf and basketball.

Grant Young received the General John Churchill Academic Warrior Award, the Richard W. and Annabelle Bohaychyk Memorial Scholarship Grant, and the Ed and Linda Kuvlesky ‘Blue Collar’ Scholarship. He will attend the New Castle School of Trades to obtain his heavy equipment operator’s license and commercial driver’s license.
