Marlins to close season with 27 games in 23 days to make up for COVID-19 outbreak

Miami Marlins fans: Buckle up. The team’s final three-plus weeks of this shortened season are going to be crazy if it plays out as Major League Baseball outlined it on Thursday.

The extremely brief summary: 27 games in 23 days. Five doubleheaders, including four in a span of 10 days. Zero days off.

It’s part of a slew of schedule updates in response to a slew of postponed games because of coronavirus outbreaks among the Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals over the past two weeks that ultimately impact 13 of the league’s 30 teams.

Miami’s new schedule includes a five-day, seven-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies that features two doubleheaders and three doubleheaders against the Washington Nationals, including one in which Miami will be the home team at Nationals Park.

Miami’s final off day of the season will be Sept. 3 after their two-game home series against the Toronto Blue Jays.
