Marlins finish in sixth place at boys state hockey tournament

Mar. 12—BROOKINGS — The Mitchell Marlins finished in sixth place at the South Dakota state boys high school hockey tournament after a 1-2 weekend at Larson Ice Center.

On Saturday, the Marlins won a consolation round game 4-3 in overtime over Watertown. On Sunday, the Marlins lost 5-0 to Sioux Falls 2 to conclude the season in sixth place.

In the overtime win over Watertown, Parker Denne scored the game-winner 79 seconds into the extra period. Tanner Puetz, Lukas Jerke and Tyson Sabers also scored in the game, with an assist from Levi Loken. Drake Jerke made 30 saves in the win, and the Marlins outshot Watertown, 38-33.

In the Sioux Falls matchup, the Marlins allowed three goals in the second period and two more in the third period. Nick Gergen scored twice and Ashton Eining, Alexander Heibult and Drayton Decourcey each scored for the Flyers, who had a shutout from goaltender Trey Salonen.

The Marlins outshot the Flyers 36-33 for the game but finished 0 for 8 on the power play. Drake Jerke finished with 28 saves in the game.

Mitchell finished the season at 12-12-1. In the rest of the tournament, Brookings defeated Sioux Falls 1, 5-2 and Oahe won 6-3 over Rushmore in the third-place game.
