Marlins manager Don Mattingly not selected for Baseball Hall of Fame by Modern Era committee

Don Mattingly’s latest chance to earn Hall of Fame status was once again denied.

The former New York Yankees slugger and current Miami Marlins manager on Sunday was not voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame via the 2020 Modern Era Ballot.

A panel of 16 Hall of Famers, executives and media members decided candidates’ fate for the Modern Baseball Hall of Fame, a separate ballot that includes players whose eligibility for the main HOF ballot expired and whose primary contributions to baseball took place between 1970 and 1987.

Like the main ballot, a player needs 75 percent approval to be inducted. Mattingly received no more than three votes.

Marvin Miller and Ted Simmons were the only two from the 10-person ballot to be voted in.

The others on the ballot: Thurman Munson, Lou Whitaker, Dwight Evans, Dale Murphy, Dave Parker, Steve Garvey and Tommy John.

Mattingly, 58, played all 14 of his big-league seasons with the Yankees, from 1982 to 1995, and was a six-time All-Star, nine-time Gold Glove winner and three-time Silver Slugger. He won the American League batting title in 1984 and was the league’s MVP and RBI leader in 1985. He is heading into his 10th season as an MLB manager and fifth with the Marlins.

Mattingly was on the main hall of fame ballot from 2001 to 2015, but he maxed out with 28.2 percent support in his first year.

While Mattingly missed the cut, his boss and one-time Yankees teammate Derek Jeter in about a month will very likely learn he is heading to the Hall of Fame.

Jeter, the Marlins’ CEO and part-owner, is almost a shoo-in to be inducted on his first ballot when looking at his 20-year career with the Yankees. He posted a career .310 batting average with 3,465 hits, 360 home runs and 1,311 RBI. He was a 14-time All-Star, five-time World Series Champion, five-time Gold Glove Award winner, two-time Silver Slugger and the 2000 World Series MVP.

Two former Marlins — Josh Beckett and Brad Penny — are also among the 31 players on the ballot.

Results will be announced on Jan. 21.
