What is on Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcántara’s shoes?

As the Miami Marlins took on the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night, viewers might have caught a glimpse of something different. What was that on pitcher Sandy Alcántara’s shoes?

June 8 is World Ocean Day, a day that means a lot to Alcántara. Being from the Dominican Republic and now living in Miami, Alcántara has always been surrounded by the ocean. Alcántara decided to join Team Ocean to use his platform to help ocean conservation.

“For both Florida and my hometown in the Dominican Republic, the oceans make our community what it is,” Alcántara said via email before the game, which he did not start. “I want to help keep our oceans clean so that people can enjoy the beautiful beaches for generations to come.”

This is not the first time that Alcántara has worked on improving the ocean. Alcántara previously partnered with Players for the Planet, cleaning up local beaches in the Dominican Republic.

“I have so many memories as a child going to the beach, so I want to make sure it’s just as beautiful for future generations,” Alcántara said.

In the designing process for his custom cleats, Alcántara worked with Stadium Custom Kicks. It was important to Alcántara that the marlin was the main feature on the cleats.

“I love how the marlins are leaping through the air,” Alcántara said. “It’s one of my favorite parts about a marlin. How flashy and noticeable they are jumping out of the water.”

You may just see Alcántara wearing these custom cleats more than once. With June being National Ocean Month, Alcántara plans on showing off the cleats during his next start.
