Marlton 'matriarch' loses life in Medford crash

MEDFORD - An elderly motorist died one week after being injured in a two-vehicle crash on Route 70, police say.

Lorraine Blumberg, 85, of Marlton was one of two senior citizens to lose their lives in recent traffic accidents.

Separately, a 73-year-old Pilesgrove woman died Aug. 31 when a rear-end collision pushed a car into oncoming traffic.

In the Medford accident, Blumberg was taken to a trauma center after two vehicles collided at Route 70 and North Main Street on Aug. 22.

The Sagemore Drive resident died on Aug. 29, according to Medford police.

An obituary described Blumberg as the matriarch of a large family and "a glowing beacon of love."

"Her meticulous appearance and energy were unmatched," it said, adding Blumberg "cherished her family and friends above all else."

The other driver, whose name was not released, also was taken to the trauma center.

The accident remains under investigation "due to the severity of the injuries and the passing of (Blumberg)," Medford police said in a statement.

The Pilesgrove victim, Jane String, was riding in a Pontiac that had stopped to turn left into a driveway on Route 40 around 3:20 p.m. on Aug. 31, police said.

A dump truck rear-ended the car, pushing it into the path of an oncoming Nissan.

The crash killed String and seriously injured the 72-year-old driver of the Pontiac.

The Nissan's driver had minor injuries, police said.
