Marquette earns No. 9 seed in the NCAA women's basketball tournament, will play South Florida in the first round

Friday will be busy for Marquette basketball fans.

The men's team will take on Vermont in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Columbus, Ohio, and the women's squad will be playing against South Florida in Columbia, South Carolina.

The MU women, who had been pegged as a bubble team by several prognosticators, earned a No. 9 seeding.

The Golden Eagles (21-10) will play in the NCAA Tournament for the second time under fourth-year head coach Megan Duffy, though MU would have made the field of the 2020 tournament that got canceled.

MU lost in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament to Virginia Tech. Last season, the Golden Eagles made the third round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament.

The winner of the MU-South Florida matchup will play the winner of top-seeded South Carolina and No. 16 Norfolk State.
