Marquette women's basketball gets victory for NCAA Tournament hopes and advances to face UConn in Big East semifinals

Six players scored in double figures for Marquette head coach Megan Duffy in the season-opening win over Tennessee-Martin.

The Marquette women's basketball team might have punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament.

The Golden Eagles pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 57-47 victory over St. John's on Saturday in the Big East tournament quarterfinals at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Both MU (21-9) and St. John's (22-8) are considered on the NCAA Tournament bubble. The Golden Eagles held the Red Storm to six points in the fourth quarter.

"What a great game by our team. I thought just our grit and toughness throughout the 40 minutes was really impressive," MU head coach Megan Duffy said. "That fourth quarter, our defensive effort really changed the trajectory of the game. When you play a team for the third time, you're trying some new things. I'm just so proud of our grit."

The Golden Eagles advance to play Connecticut in the semifinals at 2 p.m. Sunday. MU earned its first-ever victory over the perennial powerhouse last month at the Al McGuire Center.

Chloe Marotta had 18 points and 14 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season for MU.
