Married at First Sight 2020: What happened to Michelle and Owen
Married at First Sight has put more UK couples through its fast-tracked relationship experiment, this time introducing Michelle and Owen, and Shareen and David, to audiences (and each other, for the very first time).
The 2020 series has been different in more ways than one. Not only did it welcome new experts – you probably recognised Paul Carrick Brunson from Celebs Go Dating – but the Covid-19 pandemic hit midway through filming, putting even more pressure on the newly married couples.
Before this year's run, there had been no successful marriages to come out of the UK version of the format. A pretty abysmal record, we think you'll agree.
So, did any of them finally break that Married at First Sight curse?
Married at First Sight: Michelle and Owen
A primary school teacher and an IT manager, Michelle and Owen hit it off right from the moment they met at the aisle.
Their honeymoon was romantic and loved up, and their relationship was going from strength-to-strength in the early days.
The pandemic and subsequent lockdown saw Owen and Michelle deciding to isolate together, at Owen's empty family home. This actually saw them grow closer together, and even dropping the 'L' word.
Owen shared concerns that, once lockdown was over, they might struggle to adapt to a relationship back in the 'real world', outside of the bubble.
It soon became quite clear that Owen and Michelle's biggest hurdle was their distance. Owen lived in Sheffield, while Michelle was located in Hastings. He had just bought a new house, which he was hoping would become their marital home, whereas her family were adamant that they did not want to see her moving so far away.
When it came to decision day, Michelle and Owen said "I do" and revealed their wish to stay together.
It was a big "100 percent yes" from Owen.
Michelle then touched on the issue of where they would decide to live, but ultimately announced: "I think that I am going to be moving to Sheffield!"
The experts got teary eyed, with Paul revealing how "major" the good news was.
Six weeks later, and the pair were still going strong even after the cameras had stopped filming.
They have become the first success story for Married at First Sight UK.
Married at First Sight: Shareen and David
David and Shareen appeared to have a picture perfect wedding day, but from the wedding night onwards things started to go downhill pretty fast.
Shareen struggled with the different approaches they each had to life, and argued that they had not been able to connect on a deeper level.
When the pandemic hit, they chose to isolate separately while still keeping in touch virtually. The pair seemed to struggle with communication and ended up having the same disagreements over and over.
On decision day, in front of the experts, they ultimately decided to end their marriage. David offered his answer first, with Shareen following quickly afterwards, and their break-up was unanimous.
Shareen was clear that she felt no negativity towards David, but did not think that they would remain friends after the show.
After the experiment was over, Shareen said that she is still looking for her soulmate. David is still single too, and looking for love.
As it turns out, there were actually two more Married at First Sight couples for 2020's series five.
Expert Paul Carrick Brunson revealed on Twitter: "We actually had 4 couples. The UK locked down in the middle of filming (1 day before 2 of the couples were to marry). They were introduced anyway and have fallen deeply in love..."
