Marriott Theatre announces 2023 season, with musicals on Carole King, Buddy Holly and ‘Big Fish’

The Marriott Theatre, known as Chicagoland’s longest-running musical theatre, has announced its 2023 season, with shows about big music stars, baseball and “Big Fish,” as well as options for younger audiences.

This season is under the direction of Peter Blair, who took over as executive director after Terry James retired this summer, and Peter Marston Sullivan, who replaced Aaron Thielen as artistic director.

“Big Fish” (Feb. 1, 2023, through March 19, 2023): Based on the hit movie and book, this show follows Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman. Directed by Henry Godinez and choreographed by Tommy Rapley.

“Damn Yankees” (April 19, 2023, through June 4, 2023): This show is about a middle-aged man who makes a deal with the devil to become a baseball player. His goal? To help his favorite team, the Washington Senators, beat the New York Yankees. Directed by James Vásquez with choreography by Tyler Hanes.

“Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story” (June 28, 2023, through August 13, 2023): This musical, which has won seven Tony Awards, follows the rise of Buddy Holly until his tragic death in 1959 and features hits like “Everyday.” Directed and choreographed by Amber Mak.

“Gypsy” (Aug. 30, 2023, through Oct. 15, 2023): This classic musical tells the story of a particularly ambitious stage mother, with tons like “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” and “Let Me Entertain You.” Directed by Victor Malana Maog and choreographed by Stephanie Klemons.

“Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” (Nov. 8, 2023, through Dec. 31, 2023): The season ends with this Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical all about Carole King, with hits like “You’ve Got a Friend” and “Natural Woman.”

For younger audiences, the 2023 season will include “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” (Feb. 17, 2023, through April 1, 2023), “Elephant and Piggie’s We Are in a Play!” (July 14, 2023, through Aug. 13, 2023) and “The Snow Queen” (Nov. 17, 2023, through Dec. 31, 2023).
